The European/International Computer Driving Licence (E/ICDL) is the internationally recognised qualification which enables candidates to demonstrate their competence in the use of Information Technology (IT). The record breaking E/ICDL is the fastest growing IT user qualification in over 125 countries.

The E/ICDL is designed specifically for those who wish to gain a benchmark qualification in computing to enable them to develop their IT skills and enhance their career prospects. No prior knowledge of IT or computer skills is needed to study the E/ICDL.
To support the E/ICDL syllabus, the University's E/ICDL training programme and a drop-in workshop (see below) are available for all staff via the Staff Development Office. Steven Mensah (IT and Web Support Trainer) provides classroom based training to bring the skill level of staff to the point where they can feel confident about taking the E/ICDL examinations [ see the IT training web page for further details of training courses ].
The University is an E/ICDL approved Test Centre and examinations can be conducted in the HR IT training suite (STB4, Basement level, Stewart House, 32 Russell Square, London WC1B 5DN).
To achieve the E/ICDL, candidates must undertake seven modules concerning IT. The seven modules that make up the E/ICDL are as follows:
The seven examinations can be taken in any order. Staff may take them one at a time or as many as they feel ready to attempt.

To register for the E/ICDL qualification, staff should contact Steven Mensah during any of the drop-in E/ICDL workshop sessions (Wednesdays, 1230hrs - 1430hrs in STB4).
Each member of staff will need to present their ID card (as part of the internal verification process) and fill out a registration form. When a candidate is ready to undertake any testing, candidate details will be registered with the BCS (British Computer Society).
Candidates sit a small test (up to 45 minutes) for each module using Automatic Testing Software on the PC. A series of tasks are required to produce, for instance, documents or worksheets and/or answer some multiple-choice questions regarding the use of IT.
A pass grade of 75% or higher is required to pass each E/ICDL module. Test results are presented immediately after a test.
To book a full test, use the online E/ICDL test booking form and an E/ICDL invigilator will confirm your chosen date/time/module test.
Please note that testing must be undertaken under examination conditions in STB4, Basement level, Stewart House, 32 Russell Square, London, WC1B 5DN. A candidate cannot undertake a full E/ICDL test in their office or online at home (i.e. not in any other location other than the registered E/ICDL test centre unless permission is granted by the British Computer Society).
It should also be noted that a candidate has a maximum time length of up to three years to complete all testing from the date of the first successful test.
When enrolling on the E/ICDL, a candidate will be issued with an electronic log book number to record progress through all seven modules. When each module is successfully completed, the results are uploaded to the BCS (British Computer Society). Once all seven modules have been completed, a certificate is automatically despatched via the test centre.
A candidate can take each test as many times as required to pass (re-sits cannot be undertaken on the same day of the original test).
E/ICDL candidates may “try out” the mock tests (known as primers) in the drop-in workshop sessions on Wednesdays (1230hrs - 1430hrs) in STB4 (Basement level, Stewart House, 32 Russell Square, London, WC1B 5DN).

A registered E/ICDL candidate may also make use of primers available via the Online ATS (Automated Testing System) provided by Litmus Learning.
The primers provide candidates with a superb opportunity to practise prior to a test in order to gain familiarity with the style of questions (note that full tests will of course provide slightly different questions to those used during primers).
Mock tests / primers do not need to be conducted under examination conditions.
Browse the staff development web page for further details/dates of the drop in Wednesday workshop sessions or access the Online ATS (Automated Testing System) page for further details with regards to online E/ICDL primers.
To support the E/ICDL, a number of courses in Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Access, Web/Email (Microsoft Outlook/Internet Explorer) and Using a Computer/Managing Files have been developed by the Staff Development office. A choice of Office 2003 or Office 2007 is also available for candidates (note that some Office 2007 course are currently under development - see training page for further details).
A schedule of IT training courses is available via the Staff Development IT training page.
You may attend any of the session(s) where you feel training would be beneficial and you may undertake any of the E/ICDL full tests when you feel ready to do so.
A range of e-learning courses have also been created for staff who wish to self-study various modules of the E/ICDL syllabus. To view online e-learning materials, see the e‑learning training page for further details.
