Effective Supervision of Students
Monday 28 and Wednesday 30 September 2009
Room 274, 2nd floor, Stewart House
A two-day in-house seminar for staff in the School of Advanced Study
For prospective, new, or nearly new, PhD supervisors, on Monday 28 and Wednesday 30 September 2009. (The day in between allows for homework.) As you will know, the School is obliged by the UK funding councils to train its new PhD supervisors.
Professor John Wakeford (University of Lancaster) will run the seminar. John Wakeford has played a key role in creating professional development events for academic staff who are responsible for the supervision of postgraduate research students. He has been involved in this field for more than 20 years, designing workshops for universities across the UK and advising academic staff and PhD students on ways of tackling a wide range of challenges and difficulties. [One outcome of this work is a unique collection of case studies
principally from UK universities and hosted by UCL, revealing the challenges faced by doctoral students, supervisors, examiners and others contributing to the doctoral process.
Places at the September seminar are limited, and a few have already been taken, so please email Rosemary Lambeth
as soon as possible if you would like to attend.
