The Institute of Cancer Research

The Institute of Cancer Research is one of the world’s leading cancer research organisations with nationally leading HEFCE RAE ratings. It has a long and distinguished history of research that has had a major impact on the outcome for cancer patients. With our partners The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust we form the largest comprehensive cancer centre in Europe and perform high quality and original basic research and translational studies, with the aim of developing better treatments for the benefit of cancer patients worldwide. The ICR offers comprehensive, modern facilities for research and studentships supported by the Wellcome Trust, MRC, CRUK and EPSRC and the ICR’s own resources which are awarded on a competitive basis.

The ICR offers postgraduate research degrees [MPhil, PhD and MD (Res)] and a modular postgraduate taught degree in oncology aimed at clinicians undertaking specialist training in the field of Clinical or Medical Oncology leading to a Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma or MSc in Oncology.

Why study with us?

All our research students receive advanced scientific training at the cutting edge of cancer research guided by a faculty of world class researchers.

The ICR, situated on sites in Chelsea and in Sutton, has extensive state-of-the-art research and teaching facilities. The ICR is part way through a five-year programme during which we will invest over £8 million in new scientific initiatives involving the recruitment of additional world-class researchers to our faculty and the purchase of state-of-the-art equipment.

ICR activities that enhance the student experience include:

  • Award-winning subject-specific and generic interactive training material.
  • Extensive programme of lectures and seminars, with a series of distinguished lectures given by high-profile UK and international speakers.
  • Annual conference, which all research students attend, focuses on the innovative work of the ICR.
  • A library on both sites provides a full range of library services, a networked catalogue and various web-based learning resources.
  • A very active student committee organises a range of on-site sports and social events.
