The University offers a quick, reliable and economic Computer Assisted Assessment service (CAA). This provides facilities both for the maintenance and application of a huge bank of examination questions, and for the computer-based marking of tests prepared either from the bank or independently. The service is intensively used by the University's medical schools and by other institutions both within and outside the University. Question styles include both the traditional 'determinate response' type, and more up-to-date designs for 'extended matching' and 'single best answer'.
The question bank is actively maintained by specialist groups. Throughout the year, tests are composed from the bank for in-course as well as final assessments, and examination papers are generated automatically.
Computer-based assessment, particularly, although not exclusively, in the medical and related fields, is an important area of growth. The great attractions are its demonstrable objectivity at a time of increasing anti-discriminatory legislation, and the fact that once questions have been written and tested, the process requires very little extra human resource.
New users of the question-banking and/or marking facilities are welcome. Enquiries should be addressed to the Medical Examinations team
