Medical and Dental Appointments

The Academic Bodies and central activities of the University of London (the "central University") has a duty of care for the health and safety of its employees.  In this context, employees are entitled to take reasonable paid time off work to attend medical or dental appointments.  However, employees are expected to arrange such appointments, wherever possible, to minimise time out of the office and disruption to the work of the Division.

Managers may legitimately request that evidence of an appointment be presented prior to granting time off (except in the case of emergency appointments) though, due to the potential sensitivity of the information, the employee cannot be required to show that evidence to the Manager and may instead present appropriate evidence to the Human Resources Department.

Managers may wish to remind employees that the services of the Gower Street Practiceare available to them during working hours and that use of this service may, where appropriate, present a way in which staff can minimise absence for medical appointments.
