Shared Parental Leave

Shared parental leave is a new legal right which will enable eligible mothers, fathers, partners and adoptors to choose how to share time off work during the first year after the birth or placement of their child. The regulations came in to force on 1 December 2014 and apply to parents of children due to be born, or adopted, on or after 05 April 2015.

Parents will be able to share a defined allocation of leave and could decide to be off work at the same time and/or take it in turns to have periods of leave to look after the child.  Additional Paternity leave will continue to be available for children due before 5 April 2015 but will then be replaced by the new arrangements.

The University is keen to support new parents and a policy will be introduced before the end of the year once more detailed guidelines are available for employers. In the meantime more information can be found on the government website -
