Increases and Consolidation of London Weighting

The University’s offer of a significant increase to London Weighting was accepted by a large majority in a ballot of members of UCU and Unison in December 2014.

As a result London Weighting will increase to £3,500 p.a. in annual stages from 1 August 2014 to 1 August 2018 as follows:

01/08/2014 - £2,407
01/08/2015 - £2,680
01/08/2016 - £2,954
01/08/2017 - £3,227
01/08/2018 - £3,500

The first increase of £273 p.a., backdated to 1 August 2014, will be paid in January 2015 pay to all those currently in receipt of LW, with part-time staff receiving a pro-rata increase.

This settlement has been reached following negotiations between the University and its recognised unions UCU and Unison. The settlement includes immediate consolidation of the allowance; national pay increases will apply to this element of pay after 2018. There is provision in the agreement to meet with UCU and Unison to review London Weighting if during the period to 1 August 2018 the rise in the London Living Wage is 6% or above.

Background

  • The settlement equates to an average annual increase in LW of 10.4% per annum over the period;
  • Four colleges of the federation continue to pay LW at the rate of £2,134;
  • The 2018 rate will put us in the upper quartile of rates paid in the federation;
  • According to a recent survey of HEIs in London, the new rate will also be in the upper quartile of allowances in the 22 London institutions that retain an identifiable London allowance;
  • The increase represents a significant extra financial commitment on payroll of around £1.25m p.a for the University from 2018.
