Leadership & Management Guide

The guide below aims to give managers a background to the Leadership and Management Programme, some guidance on how to get the most out of it and how to book activities.

Why this development programme?

We have designed the programme based on information from appraisal, the University Strategy and Operating Plan, staff survey, focus groups, and through formal and information consultation. 

Aims of the programme

To improve performance management and engagement in order to deliver on our challenging strategy. This will be achieved through developing skills, knowledge and behaviour in:

  • Giving staff more autonomy by managing by outputs and developing a coaching approach to management 
  • Improving employee voice by involving staff in decisions
  • Positively addressing conflict or performance issues
  • Being an inclusive manager, getting the best from a diverse team
  • Supporting the career development
  • Improving communication across the University thus supporting the One University aim, finding synergies, increasing understanding and efficiencies
  • Developing the key management skills of financial management, recruitment and selection, managing through change and appraisal

Some of the aims relate directly to a particular part of the programme while others are spread across a few (e.g. employee voice and being an inclusive manager)

Measures of success

  • Usefulness rating on post course feedback
  • Quantitative and qualitative feedback 6 months after the programme which would include rating of confidence change, peer reviews
  • University overall Engagement scores on staff survey
  • Case study examples of changes of behaviour from leaders and managers network
  • Feedback from directors
