Ian Grainger graduated with first class honours in Jurisprudence (University College, Oxford, 1977). He also has a first class BA in Italian (University of London International Programmes, 2001) and an MA in Italian Studies (UCL, 2003). He was called to the Bar in 1978 and practised commercial law from the Chambers of Lord Grabiner QC at 1 Essex Court in the Temple. His practice covered all kinds of business litigation with a strong international, particularly Italian, flavour. He is a Bencher of the Inner Temple. He was made a Recorder in 2003 and on 19 October 2009 was sworn in as a full-time Circuit Judge.
In the past, Ian taught law part-time at University and Pembroke Colleges, Oxford and more recently has lectured at various Italian universities. He has trained young barristers for a number of years, being a member of the Advocacy Training Committee of the Inner Temple. He is passionately interested in all things Italian and is a past Vice-Chairman of the British-Italian Society.
From 2003 to 2009, Ian was an Independent Member of Council at the University of Roehampton, chairing its Audit Committee and serving on its Ethics Board, Nominations and Governance Committee and Honorary Awards Board.
