The Careers Group, University of London

The Careers Group, University of London is recognised as an international centre of excellence and is the largest higher education careers service in the UK. Our mission is to provide products and services designed to help individuals achieve and maintain job satisfaction throughout their working lives.

Our key customers are academic institutions wanting to deliver careers services to their students, staff and graduates; organisations looking for help with career development activities; careers service providers seeking support; graduate recruiters wishing to meet students and graduates at any stage in their working lives; and individual job seekers or career changers.

The Careers Group consists of 37 careers advisers and 36 commercial, information and infrastructure staff who are employed by both the University of London and its trading company Senate House Services. An additional 25 careers advisers are employed at the Colleges under the Careers Group College Careers Services. These staff deliver a full careers service to undergraduates, postgraduates, contract researchers and the institution's staff.

Central Services support the work of the careers staff based in institutions including:

  • The Events  team creating and delivering the largest most prestigious graduate recruitment and information events in the UK
  • Staff training and development through the Professional Development Unit 
  • Information and Research responsible for the updating and maintenance of occupational careers information, the selection and acquisition of publications and managing content on The Careers Group websites.
  • Communication Services and Vacancies  handling employer vacancies through the online jobs board, JobOnline, and printed publications such as the Finalist Directory.
  • The Graduate Research team is responsible for the collection and collation of research data on the destinations of graduates.
  • The Online Services and Commercial Development  teams support all teams delivering products and services.

The work of The Careers Group contains a significant element of commercial consultancy. C2 is a specialist, not-for-profit service within The Careers Group devoted to providing skills and career consultancy to individuals as well as commercial, not-for-profit and public sector organisations. Supported by a central team, we now have over 45 C2 careers advisers who work with individuals to provide bespoke one-to-one career coaching to professionals at any stage in their career.

C2 also provide organisations with career consultancy and coaching services. Clients include British Medical Association, London Deanery, London Development Agency, HSBC, Metropolitan Police, City of London Corporation, Science Museum, Shell, Chartered Institute of Marketing, Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals, Guys and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust and the European University Institute.

The essence of the services provided by our team of qualified careers advisers within C2 is a deep knowledge of the technical, personal and social skills necessary for success over the whole range of positions. This includes the application of tools for the identification of skills required to undertake particular jobs, the assessment of individuals or groups against these requirements, the design and development of bespoke training and development workshops and the provision of one-to-one careers coaching.
