Princess Elizabeth II aged 3

The University of London is extremely proud of its longstanding relationship with the British Monarchy.

Her Majesty The Queen celebrates her 91st birthday on 21st April 2017 and is the longest serving British monarch in history after surpassing the reign of her great great grandmother Queen Victoria in September 2015.

Her Majesty The Queen is the Visitor of the University, acting through the Lord President of the Council. Her Majesty holds two honorary degrees from the University in London, in Music and Law.

The Queen usually delegates her Visitor functions to the Lord President of the Council. There is also a ceremonial element to the role. One of the most important functions of the visitor was within academic institutions, where the visitor had to determine disputes arising between the institution and its members. However, in 2004 the Higher Education Act transferred the jurisdiction of Visitors over the grievances of students in English and Welsh universities to the Office of the Independent Adjudicator.

The Queen’s great uncle, the Earl of Athlone, was Chancellor of London University between 1932-1955. The association between the Royal family and the position of Chancellor has subsequently continued with Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother holding the position from 1955-1980. Our current Chancellor is Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal, who has been in post since 1981.

Since the University was founded in 28th November 1836 only ten people have held the position of Chancellor.
