The institutes are dedicated to supporting and advancing the research of national and international academic communities in their respective disciplines. They undertake and publish academic research, provide research fellowships and resources for networking and research collaboration, and contribute to the development of their own world class library collections.

The institutes of the School collectively offer a wide range of academic and research services including specialist subject advice and expertise, academic and research skills training, digital research and study resources, short courses and summer schools, undertaking research, disseminating research findings, research fellowships, consultancy, academic publications, networking and collaborations, and hosting a wide range of academic and public events. The School also welcomes enquiries from those with an interest in collaborative or sponsorship opportunities across its wide range of research promotion and support activities.

Students can take advantage of guidance from leading academic scholars and from the specialist expertise of the institutes. Well-established research skills programmes are offered to its students (notably history, law, English, modern languages, music) and in certain specialist areas (palaeography, Renaissance culture, legal history).
