We are the trustee of over 100 trust funds, used to support academic activities at our federation members, the School of Advanced Study and Senate House Library.
The trust funds were established following generous donations from supporters. Some are almost as old as the University itself, dating back to the 1850s, while many others have been created since 2000. Please find details of our Laws Trust Funds below.
Laws Trust Funds
Howard Drake was the first librarian at the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies. The fund has previously been used to support library relative visitors to the Institute.
The W. G. Hart Bequest was given to the University in 1958 and was “to be applied in such manner as they shall think fit for the advancement of Legal Education in England.” The University currently gives half of the income to the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies and splits the remaining half equally between all the Law Schools at the University’s Colleges.
The fund is used to support the W.G. Hart Workshop, which is held every summer at the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies.
The Georg Schwarzenberger Prize was created as a memorial to the former Emeritus Professor of International Law at the University of London following donations from friends and family. The Georg Schwarzenberger Prize in International Law is awarded annually by the Director of the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies to a student in the Faculty of Laws of the University of London considered to be outstanding in the field of Public International Law. Each of the six faculties of law nominates a candidate for the Director’s consideration and both undergraduates and postgraduates are eligible. When candidates of equal merit are nominated the prize can be awarded jointly.
