Check the catalogue first to see if we already have what you need. If we don’t, complete the interlibrary loan request form.
You can request:
- A loan of a book from another library
- A copy of a book chapter or journal article
- A thesis from another University (please check EThOS first)
The interlibrary loan service is open to all of our members, but please do check the following first:
School of Advanced Study (SAS)
SAS students and staff can make use of our interlibrary loan service for free. You will not be charged for interlibrary book loans or article requests.
University of London
Current students or staff at one of the University of London Institutes can get free articles or book chapters from us via our RapidILL service.
If you want a loan of a book, we recommend that you check with the library at your own college. They will usually offer interlibrary loans for free, or a much lower price.
All other members
Book loans via the interlibrary loan service will incur a charge, but articles or book chapters should be free via our RapidILL service.

*Individual journal articles or book chapters are free when obtained via our RapidILL service. If we are not able to get hold of them via RapidILL, we will let you know.
We might be able to obtain them by applying to individual libraries, but this will incur a charge of £14.60. We will always ask your permission before applying for a copy or book loan which will incur a charge.
We can borrow books and theses for you from other libraries if they have them. For this service we currently charge £24.20 to cover administrative costs and shipping.
If you need just one chapter from a book, let us know and we will be able to look for it on RapidILL, which is free.
Delivery time
Books take around 5-10 days to arrive by post, and we will email you when they are ready for collection.
If the item cannot be supplied by a library in the UK, we can apply to overseas libraries if you request this. We will contact you to confirm the price once we have found an overseas library willing to supply the item.
You can specify a deadline when you place your request, which we will use as a guide. However, we cannot guarantee we will be able to cancel requests once placed. If the item has already been sent by the supplying library you will be required to pay the full amount.
Where do I pick up the book?
Once your item is available we will contact you. Book loans can be collected from the Service Desk on the 4th floor of the Library.
How do I pay?
If you are required to pay, we will send you a payment summary with instructions on how to pay online. If you would like to pay in another way (for example when picking up the book) just let us know.
If you need a journal article or a chapter from a book, we will try to order a copy for you. Copies obtained through our RapidILL service are free of charge.
If we cannot obtain a copy through RapidILL, we will let you know before we proceed to purchase a copy, which you would then be charged for. We will not do this until we have obtained permission.
Delivery time
We can usually obtain articles and book chapters for you within 48 hours.
How will I get them?
We will usually send you a copy via email. When ordering, you will complete a form declaring that you will adhere to copyright. Please do not share or reproduce the article or book chapter which we send you.
How do I pay?
