Our Fellows

There are currently 42 CODE Fellows drawn from across the University of London member institutions, and from other UK and international institutions. The  Fellowship brings together an inclusive representation of thought leaders in research, academic practice and leadership in online and distance education. The Fellows include diverse roles: teachers, course leaders, senior managers, researchers, educational technologists, learning designers and policy advisors. CODE and its Fellows are ensuring that its commitment to improving equality, diversity and inclusion is evident in its strategic activities, educational innovations and research.

Samantha Ahern CDE Fellow

Samantha Ahern BSc PGCE PGDip MSc FHEA ACMALT

Samantha is the Faculty Learning Technology Lead for the Faculty of the Built Environment at UCL. Her experience spans Secondary and Higher Education, and has an interesting combination of pedagogical, intelligent systems and information security knowledge and experience. Underpinning her work and key areas of interest are equity and social justice.

Dr Linda Amrane-Cooper

Dr Linda Amrane-Cooper is Director of Academic Practice in Distance Education at the University of London and is Director of the Centre for Online and Distance Education (CODE) as well as leading the Postgraduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education. Linda's academic and professional career has spanned Higher Education, teaching, and Museum Education.

Professor Stephen Brown

Professor Stephen Brown FRSA, CMALT

Stephen Brown is Emeritus Professor of Learning Technologies and Director of the learning media design consultancy Hyperworks Ltd. He has been a CODE Fellow since 2010 and is currently a member of the CODE Executive team as Editor in Chief and lead on Networking and Communications.

Dr Elizabeth Burns

Elizabeth is Reader in Philosophy of Religion and Programme Director for the Divinity Programmes by Distance and Flexible Learning at the University of London.

Peter Cannell

Dr Pete Cannell

Pete is an educational researcher and Associate Lecturer in Mathematics with the Open University. From 2014-2017 he was co-director of the Scottish Funding Council’s Scotland wide Opening Educational Practice in Scotland project and he’s currently the chair of SCAPP (Scotland’s Community of Access and Participation Practitioners).

Lynsie Chew

Lynsie Chew

Lynsie Chew is a Professor in Financial Education at UCL School of Management and also Programme Director of the global online MSc Professional Accountancy.

Ashley Cox

Ashley Cox

Dr Ashley Cox has been involved in distance learning education for over 15 years. Beginning with his award of the online tutor fellowship during his PhD where he acted as senior tutor for the programme. Since 2014 he has been working on the Global Diplomacy Programme at both the SOAS and the University of London, where he is a Lecturer in Diplomacy and Public Policy and Global Diplomacy programme director.

Jon Gregson

Jon Gregson

Jon is Director of Development Dreamers Ltd and is currently based in UK. Jon was one of the founding fellows of the University of London Centre for Distance Education, and has a keen interest in mobile learning, MOOCs, OERs and capacity development for distance education in developing countries.

Nichola Gretton CDE Fellow

Nichola Gretton BA with QTS, MA, SFHEA

Nichola works in Education Services at the University of Leicester, as Academic Practice Development Manager. She is a University of Leicester Distinguished Teaching Fellow awarded in recognition of her leadership in the design, development and delivery of innovative curricula and teaching and learning enhancement projects.

Professor Stylianos Hatzipanagos

Professor Stylianos Hatzipanagos

Professor Stylianos Hatzipanagos is a Fellow of the Centre for Online and Distance Education at the University of London. He has been the recipient of four CODE Teaching and Research awards.

Leo Havemann CDE Fellow

Leo Havemann

Leo Havemann graduated from the University of Waikato in New Zealand, and went on to teach in higher education both there and in Australia, before working in the UK in industry and then in further education as a librarian and learning technologist.

Leonard Houx CDE Fellow

Leonard Houx SFHEA

Leonard is Senior Instructional Designer at Bayes Business School (City University). Leonard has been working in digital education for over 12 years and has written and presented on best practices extensively.

Dr Christina Howell-Richardson

Dr Christina Howell-Richardson

Christina is an independent Lecturer in Higher Education and a Fellow of the CODE with expertise in academic professional development and learning development. Her specific interests as a teacher and a researcher are in dialogic teaching and learning and online pedagogy.

Dr Gwyneth Hughes

Dr Gwyneth Hughes

Gwyneth Hughes is Reader in Higher Education at the UCL Institute of Education, where she leads and teachers on Masters programmes in higher education and supervises doctoral students. As a CODE fellow, she is part of the development team for the online Postgraduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching for University of London.

Dr Dimitrios N. Koufopoulos

Dr Dimitrios N. Koufopoulos BSc, MBA, PhD, FCIM, FIC, AIIA

Dimitrios is a Visiting Professor in the School of Law, Centre for Commercial Studies and Commerce, at Queen Mary University and Director of the Online MBA Programmes at University of London. He has an extensive experience directly with course design and the delivery of a number of distance learning management programmes.

Stuart MacDonald, FRSA

Stuart is Director of ICR Research, his consultancy business which focuses on international education and culture.

Patricia McKellar

Patricia McKellar

Patricia is currently the Associate Director (Learning & Teaching) in the Undergraduate Laws Programme for the University of London having joined in 2009. Patrica's work involves the development and implementation of the learning, teaching and assessment strategy for the programme specifically in relation to the embedding of e-learning technologies and the development of an interactive learning environment.

Dr Alexandra Mihai

Alexandra is Assistant Professor of Innovation in Higher Education in the Department of Educational Research and Development, School of Business and Economics, Maastricht University.

Neil Mosley CDE Fellow

Neil Mosley

Neil is a consultant specialising in online & digital education. He has worked at the intersection of strategy, design, learning and technology for Imperial College and Cardiff University, and now works with a range of universities and education providers across a breadth of areas related to digital and online education.

Oscar Mwanaga CDE Fellow

Dr. Oscar Mwaanga

Oscar is the Programme Director for the Post Graduate Certificate in International Sports Management at the University of London Worldwide. His scholarly and practitioner interest is in Sport for Sustainable Development as well as online and distance sports education. He takes particular interest in decolonisation of Higher Education curricula and pedagogies.

Professor Norbert Pachler, CDE Fellow

Professor Norbert Pachler, FAcSS, PFHEA

Norbert is Professor of Education at the UCL Institute of Education with academic specialisms in the areas of digital education, teacher education and development and language education. His substantive role currently is that of Pro-Vice-Provost (Teaching, Learning, Digital Education) at UCL. He has a long-standing association with University of London Worldwide.

Dr Alan Parkinson

Professor Alan Parkinson

Alan is Professor of Financial Education and School Deputy Director in UCL School of Management. In the context of education, he has a Doctorate in Education and Co-chaired the development of UoL's global online MSc Professional Accountancy (MPAcc). He is currently development co-chair of UOL's MPAcc version 2, and UOL's new MSc Accounting and Financial Management. He is module leader for online Management Accounting Frameworks, and Financial Management modules.

Dr Daksha Patel

Dr Daksha Patel MD, MMed (Ophth), MSc (CEH), FHEA

Daksha is a medical Doctor and an Ophthalmologist by training and has worked across a range of clinical settings in East Africa. Daksha is the e-learning director for the Disability and Eye Group (DEG) at LSHTM, and is involved in developing open educational practice and massive open online courses (MOOCs) in eye care.

Luis Pereira is Senior Lecturer in Educational Development in the Department of Learning Enhancement and Development (LEaD) at City, University of London and Programme Co-Director of the MA in Academic Practice.

Matthew Phillpott

Dr Matthew Phillpott

Matthew is a writer, educator, and historian with expertise in online, face-to-face, and hybrid training solutions and digital teaching practices. Matthew worked for the School of Advanced Study (SAS), University of London for over a decade and is now pursuing a freelance career.

Philip Powell is Director, Business School for the Creative Industries, University for the Creative Arts.

Dr Simon J Rofe

Dr J Simon Rofe

Simon is Reader in Diplomatic and International Studies in the Centre for International Studies and Diplomacy and Deputy Director of CODE. Alongside his research and practice in Diplomacy and global history, with a particular focus upon the diplomacy of international sport, he has a strong interest in digital education related to online learning and the professional development of those working with online students.

Jonathan P. San Diego

Jonathan P. San Diego BSEd MSc PhD FHEA

Jonathan has been at the cutting edge of the use of educational technologies for over 20 years throughout his career. He is a Senior Lecturer in Educational Technology and Healthcare Informatics and the Director of the iTEL Hub at King’s College London. Research interests include learning with computer-based representation.

Dr Clare Sansom

Dr Clare Sansom

Clare Sansom combines teaching postgraduate biomedical science, with a particular emphasis on distance education, with science writing and editing. She is one of the initial group of CDE fellows and has served in that capacity since 2005. She is involved in organising conferences and workshops for the CDE, particularly the annual RIDE conference, and she regularly blogs these events for the centre website.

Sarah Sherman

Sarah Sherman Bsc PGCE MBPsS CMALT

Sarah has worked in the field of e-learning for over 17 years and currently manages the Bloomsbury Learning Environment (BLE) – a shared e-learning service for six London-based Higher Education institutions. Sarah is responsible for managing the coordination, implementation and development of Technology Enhanced Learning across the BLE partners, helping to support the use of the Virtual Learning Environment and associated technologies, such as lecture capture and web conferencing software.

Dr Anita Skinner

Dr Anita Skinner PhD DipHE FHEA

Anita is currently an Assistant Professor at LSHTM. Anita has a background in laboratory research and Adult education, combining the two when she joined the Infectious Diseases MSc Programme as Deputy Programme Director in 2014. Anita has been involved in the development of materials, delivery and of student support initiatives.

Donna Smith CDE Fellow

Dr Donna Smith

Dr Donna Smith is Senior Lecturer in Politics, Deputy Associate Dean Teaching and Students, and Director of the Tuition Programme at The Open University. Donna Smith’s research and scholarship interests are three-fold. Building on her experience of working in Westminster politics, her research has focused on UK politics and media, as well as active citizenship. As an experienced higher education manager, designer, and lecturer, her focus also includes teaching and learning in the social sciences (politics in particular).

Sam is Academic Director of King’s Academy which is the education development team at King’s College London. She joined King’s in 2022 after nearly seven years in a similar role at UCL. Before that she was at the Open University for many years, in the Faculty of Science and the office of the PVC Learning and Teaching.

Alan Tait is Emeritus Professor of Distance Education and Development at the Open University UK. From 2013-2015 Alan was Director of International Development and Teacher Education, and before that was Pro-Vice Chancellor (Academic) at the Open University UK 2007-2012, and from 2004-2007 Dean of the Faculty of Education and Language Studies.

Maylyn is the Head of Academic Development at Singapore Institute of Management Global Education.

Dr Christine Thuranira-McKeever

Dr Christine Thuranira-McKeever

Christine is the Director for Online and Distance Learning Programmes at the Royal Veterinary College and is responsible for academic and strategic leadership of the Programmes. Christine has been the recipient of a teaching research award from CODE, investigating factors impacting scholarship students’ learning experience, and has been undertaking a study that is exploring the impact of the University of London’s teaching, learning and assessment framework – ‘Track C”.

Professor Steven Warburton has over 25 years of experience working across the international higher education landscape as an academic, researcher, project director and senior executive.

Luke Woodham CDE Fellow

Dr Luke Woodham

Dr Luke Woodham is a Lecturer in Technology-Enhanced Learning and the Head of the eLearning Unit at St George’s, University of London, and a member of their Centre for Technology in Education.

Student Fellows

Our Student Fellows support CODE projects by carrying out specific tasks in agreement with a CODE Fellow supervisor, such as:

  • Developing resources, 
  • Evaluating education-related resources based on agreed criteria, 
  • Collecting/analysing data, 
  • Conducting interviews, 
  • Undertaking a literature review, 
  • Conducting a survey, 
  • Recruiting project participants.
