MSc, PGDip and PGCert

For the MSc: You complete either 12 modules or 9 modules plus a project report:

Four compulsory modules.

Plus either (once a minimum of 3 core modules have been passed):

Eight electives (at least six from the Infectious Diseases group below). The remainder may include Public Health or blended learning.

Or

Five electives (at least three from the Infectious Diseases group below.) The remainder may include Public Health or blended learning.
Project Report.

For the Postgraduate Diploma: You complete 8 modules.

Four compulsory modules.
Four elective modules (at least three from the Infectious Diseases group below.)

For the Postgraduate Certificate: You complete 4 modules.

Principles of biostatistics and epidemiology (IDM101)

Will provide you with a solid introduction to epidemiology and statistics upon which further Infectious Diseases modules will build (credit bearing).

Principles of biology (IDM102)

Will introduce you to the fundamental biological principles which are necessary for the Postgraduate Diploma and MSc in Infectious Diseases (credit bearing).

Biology of infectious diseases (IDM103 )

This module introduces students to the way pathogens work (credit bearing).

Control of infectious diseases (IDM104 )

An introduction to public health, methods for the control of infectious diseases, surveillance methods, and the design of control programmes (credit bearing).

This module aims to give students an understanding of the biology of bacteria as pathogens (credit bearing).

Nutrition and infection (IDM202)

This module aims to provide you with a basic understanding of the interactions between nutrition and infections (credit bearing).

Parasitology (IDM203)

Gain an understanding of the biology of parasites, vectors and the ways in which they can cause disease (credit bearing).

Viral infections (IDM204 )

This module aims to undertake a systematic overview of the important viruses causing infections in humans (credit bearing).

Healthcare-associated infections (IDM205 )

Gain the necessary knowledge to be able to develop a strategy to prevent healthcare associated and hospital infections (credit bearing).

Immunology of Infection and Vaccines (IDM213)

This module provides an overview of modern molecular immunology methods and immunity to infection (credit bearing).

Water, sanitation and hygiene (IDM215)

This module will enable you to understand the principles and practices that should underlie water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) interventions (credit bearing).

Epidemiology and control of infectious diseases ( IDM301 )

The aim of the module is to provide epidemiological methods useful for the investigation of communicable diseases (credit bearing).

HIV (IDM501)

Gain a broad understanding of the HIV epidemic and learn to analyse alternative therapeutic and preventive intervention strategies (credit bearing).

Tuberculosis (IDM502 )

This module will give you a broad understanding of TB control, with an emphasis on the biology and pathology of tuberculosis (credit bearing).

Malaria (IDM503)

An introduction to parasites and their vectors, malaria as a disease, and how it can be controlled (credit bearing).
