Vice-Chancellor Professor Wendy Thomson had the following to say about Rick's retirement:
"Rick has made a significant contribution to both the School of Advanced Study and the wider University over the last 5 years; drawing on his considerable experience gained both within HEIs and as the leader of two of the sector’s major funding bodies.
Of perhaps particular note is the instrumental role he played in securing the School’s ongoing funding from Research England UK and his work in developing, with colleagues, a compelling future vision for the School.
After much reflection he has concluded that it is time for him to step down from his role and commence retirement.
I am delighted that Rick will continue his association with the University as an (unremunerated) advisor and ambassador, and look forward to working with him in this role.
All that remains is for me to offer my sincere thanks both personally and on behalf of the University, and to invite you in wishing Professor Rylance a lengthy and enjoyable retirement. Once the current pandemic restrictions are eased we look forward to a celebratory farewell, perhaps in the Spring."
