Five SIM students attend the LSE Summer School
In the summer of 2024, five Singapore Institute of Management-University of London (SIM-UoL) students – Charlene Yew, Chong Xiao Pei, Huang Ziyan, Kim Suryeo, and Vera Tan – were awarded the SIM-LSE Summer School Scholarship.
This scholarship afforded the students a rare opportunity to study at LSE. They embarked on an enriching academic adventure in London and forged global connections in one of the world’s most vibrant cities.
Here, they share some highlights of their experience.
Meet the scholars
Chong Xiao Pei
Receiving the SIM-LSE Summer School scholarship was a transformative experience that validated my hard work and opened new opportunities for knowledge and cultural exchange.
Eager to embrace the rigorous academic environment, I was excited to learn from some of the best minds in the field. The exposure to advanced computational methods and practical applications of Python equipped me with valuable tools that I could leverage. The skills and knowledge I gained have significantly strengthened my foundation, honing my analytical and problem-solving abilities, which are crucial for my aspirations to become a data analyst or data engineer.
Building a robust network of international contacts prepared me to thrive in a globalised world. It boosted my confidence, adaptability, and intercultural communication skills. This journey taught me the value of perseverance and stepping outside my comfort zone. I look forward to unlocking new milestones in the coming years, thanks to the skills and insights gained from this experience.
Huang Ziyan
The scholarship was an honour that brought both excitement and uncertainty. Although I was excited to immerse myself in the experience, studying alone left me feeling jittery. The ME315 Machine Learning in Practice course, typically a 12-week programme, was condensed into an intensive 12-day schedule.
The rigorous curriculum demanded significant commitment but offered an immersive education. Hands-on tutorials and real-world case studies enhanced my understanding of complex data science concepts, giving me a competitive edge in my studies and future career. The emphasis on problem solving and practical application also refined my skills in the data science field.
London’s rich historical and cultural heritage, including visits to the Hunterian Museum and the vibrant theatre scene with my newfound friends, further enriched my experience. It deepened my appreciation for cultural diversity and global collaboration, highlighting their roles in problem-solving and innovation. The LSE Summer School emphasised not only academic excellence, but also the value of understanding and respecting different viewpoints. I am extremely grateful for this scholarship, which provided a life-changing experience that has shaped my future in countless ways.
Charlene Yew
The LSE Summer School gave me the opportunity to explore potential career paths while experiencing London’s vibrant campus life and rich culture. The experience was truly a melting pot of cultures, ideas, and perspectives. Networking events, including the Boat and Leaving Party, allowed me to connect with like-minded individuals from diverse backgrounds. These meaningful interactions not only broadened my worldview but also enriched my understanding through discussions on diversity.
The academic rigour at LSE included interactive lectures taught by leading experts and challenging assignments that were intellectually stimulating. It inspired me to dive deeper into the subjects I studied. Beyond the classroom, I attended three SPARK events – Interview Practice, Business Building Bootcamp, and Female Founders Evening. These workshops provided valuable insights into different industries, igniting my interest in entrepreneurship.
The combination of both soft and technical skills I acquired has been invaluable. Combined with the solid foundation from SIM-UOL, they sharpened my critical thinking, communication, and analytical skills, preparing me for future challenges. This transformative experience, made possible by the scholarship, inspired me to strive for excellence. I look forward to applying these learnings to future endeavours and embracing the opportunities ahead.
Vera Tan
Everyone at the LSE Summer School came with an open mind, always ready to help and share resources. The sense of community, especially among Asian participants, was deeply heartwarming. I believe this would particularly resonate with the Asian community.
In this unfamiliar setting, I had to adapt quickly to changes and remain resilient. Making friends from diverse backgrounds who welcomed me into their cultures taught me to embrace new perspectives different from my own. Every day became a new learning experience as we shared knowledge and supported each other. The summer school was a journey of self-discovery that extended beyond academics.
I gained deeper insights into my own values, interests, and strengths through the lens of a unique environment. I am thankful for the opportunity SIM-UoL has provided. Studying at SIM has offered a global experience that drove my growth, empowering me to pursue my passions with greater confidence. I am excited and ready for the challenges ahead.
Kim Suryeo
This summer was incredibly impactful, both academically and personally. Not only did I gain new knowledge and skills, but I also developed a wider perspective and formed lasting global connections.
The machine learning course was both challenging yet rewarding, covering topics such as coding, data analysis, and case studies. These experiences helped me build a solid foundation in Python, R programming and algorithms. LSE’s rigorous academic environment boosted my confidence in tackling complex problems and enhanced my critical thinking skills.
Collaborating with people from diverse backgrounds added depth to our projects and discussions. It expanded my understanding of diverse cultures and taught me how to work effectively in a team. The class discussions on global issues highlighted the far-reaching impact of technology across various cultural contexts. Outside the classroom, I forged valuable connections with professors, industry experts, and fellow students, creating a network for future collaboration and guidance.
This experience profoundly shaped my personal and professional development. It left me inspired and ready to face future challenges, with a renewed sense of purpose to make a meaningful impact in machine learning and related fields.
These five scholars embody the ambition and commitment to learning that SIM strives to cultivate. Their experiences at the LSE Summer School not only created lasting memories, but also deepened their understanding of global interconnectedness. Additionally, it equipped them with the knowledge, skills, and networks essential for both academic and professional success, preparing them to learn, and thrive, for life.
