On 5 June 2019, the Pro Vice Chancellor (International) Prof Mary Stiasny, the Centre for Distance Education and the Global Engagement team at the University of London welcomed a senior delegation from the Open University China. Dr Linda Amrane-Cooper. Head of the CODE, and CODE Fellows Prof Alan Tait, Dr Daksha Patel and Dr Gwyneth Hughes welcomed the delegation and led discussions to consider opportunities for research staff exchange, shared programme development and teacher development.

Open University China Vice President Prof. LIN Yu and Prof. LIU Jingduo, Director of the School of Political Science and Law, with colleagues from staff development, HR and teacher development provided an overview of the work of the OU China, which has in excess of 3.8 million students and over 1000 study centres. We shared ideas, challenges and strategies to provide effective on-line education and quality assurance. CDE Fellows were particularly interested in the work the OU China is undertaking to map professional work-based certificated learning to academic provision.

The Centre for Distance Education will host two visiting Scholars from the Open University China in September 2019 and follow-on discussions will continue to explore opportunities for collaboration between the World’s Oldest Distance Education provider and the largest Open University in the World.
