Paul Joseph and others leaving Pretoria Prison, August 1962

In June 2022, the Friends of Senate House Library hosted the annual Holden Lecture, which highlighted the Paul and Adelaide Joseph Archive. The Archive documents much of the South African anti-apartheid struggle, and contains several letters and cards from Nelson Mandela, posted from Robben Island Prison. The Archive was donated by Paul and Adelaide, and their family, earlier this year. More information on the Archive can be found on our website

We were delighted to have Paul and Adelaide's daughter Nadia, an active social justice campaigner who was herself involved in the anti-apartheid movement, join us to present the Archive in Conversation with Richard Espley, Head of Modern Collections at Senate House Library. Additional context was provided in closing remarks from Dr Sue Onslow, Acting Director of the Institute of Commonwealth Studies
