The University of London Insitute in Paris, Goldsmiths and the Centre for Distance Education present ‘Experiences in digital learning’, a series of monthly webinars aimed at fostering discussions among professionals in academia all along a very special post-COVID-19 academic year.
This first event in this series will cover learning design. As recent circumstances have shown, both teachers and learners have demonstrated tremendous resilience in maintaining continuity, successfully completing coursework or graduating. Our panel will discuss how to design for teaching and learning, and support interactive learning through flexible models. They will share practical design tools used for mapping the learning journey.
The panel will be composed of three experts who will discuss current practices and will be chaired by Dr Linda Amrane-Cooper, Head of the Centre for Online and Distance Education at the University of London Worldwide. It will be followed by a Q&A session where you will you be able to post your questions.

Matt Dane Baker
Matt Dane Baker has more than 40 years of healthcare and higher education experience having held several positions in clinical, academic, administrative, and research settings.
Dr. Baker currently serves as Senior Vice Provost for Academic Affairs at Thomas Jefferson University. Previously he was a university Provost, College Executive Dean, School Dean, Program Director, and Professor. Prior to full-time employment in higher education Dr. Baker worked in healthcare administration and clinical services. He also has 24 years of military service having retired as a lieutenant colonel in the New Jersey Air National Guard at McGuire Air Force Base. He has been involved in physician assistant, audiology, optometry, nursing, and military medic education since 1984 as a preceptor, guest lecturer, adjunct faculty member, and full-time professor.
He serves as an accreditation site visitor and commissioner. He is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA) and past Physician Assistant Education Association Master Faculty Award recipient. His academic interests include geriatrics, cardiovascular disease, and strategic planning.
Sally Parsley
Sally is the Digital Education Manager at the Disability and Eye Health Group. For the last 6 years, a major part of her role has been the design and production lead for Dr Daksha Patel’s team delivering the Open Education for Eye Health online courses. Since March this year, she’s also been supporting faculty to adapt modules for online delivery at LSHTM, sharing her experience, tools and approaches to design, create and deliver high-quality teaching and learning centred on the learner experience.
Sally has a proven record as design and production lead for teams delivering accessible, inclusive, relevant and applicable digital learning experiences for diverse groups of learners at tertiary level and for life-long learning. She has a demonstrated ability to collaborate with multi-disciplinary decision makers, designers, technologists, data analysts, and subject matter experts in taking educational products from idea to reality and is adept at learner-centred design and the application of continuous quality improvement to ensure consistent measurable learner achievement of intended outcomes or competencies, and performance enhancement. And she is able to plan and manage data driven projects aligning strategic goals with technology solutions to drive results.
Daksha Patel
Dr Patel is the e-learning Director, and clinical Assistant Professor within the Disability and Eye health Group, involved in developing 8 open online courses, in public health specialities, delivered through LSHTM open study and FutureLearn platforms. This unique body work is exclusive in subject content and also uniquely designed to strengthen a team learning approach for health provision across health systems.
Since 2013, Daksha has led the development of an innovative approach in Open education for eye health (OEEH), which has the primary focus to address the existing inequity in Global health education. As a trained eye surgeon and public health expert she has contributed towards the development of capacity building with multiple partners internationally.
The Open Education project has been funded by the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Trust and the team received the prestigious Collaborative Award for Teaching Excellence (CATE) in 2019, in recognition for the multiple stakeholder and partnership model in developing training.
Dr Patel is a fellow for the Centre for Distance Education (University of London Worldwide) and has been involved in a variety of educational research projects in open and distance teaching: to assess the impact of MOOCs using Value creation framework, understanding the retention of students on online course and the use of text mining for learning analytics.
As part of the digitisation of campus learning at LSHTM during the COVID pandemic, she has been involved in creating and supporting the development of tools for mapping the learning process and mentoring academic module organisers shift their approach from teacher-centric face-to-face learning to online student-centric self-direct learning.
Dr Linda Amrane-Cooper (Chair)
Dr Linda Amrane-Cooper's academic and professional career has spanned Higher Education, teaching, and Museum Education. She is head of the University of London’s Centre for Distance Education and Director of Strategic Projects. In addition, building on her 20+ years’ experience of supporting high quality learning and teaching in Higher Education experience, Dr Amrane-Cooper also leads the University of London’s PG Learning and Teaching in Higher Education programme, working with students across the Globe. Prior to joining the University of London, Linda was Dean and Head of Glasgow Caledonian University’s London campus and Dean of the Royal Docks Business School at the University of East London. She moved into the Business discipline after a long career in Education and Social Science, where roles included Associate Dean of Education and International Lead, and Head of Initial Teacher Training.
She has benefited from the opportunity to work across the UK HE sector in a wide range of universities and teach at all levels, both face to face and online. Dr Amrane-Cooper has taken an active role supporting the professional development of HE staff as an education developer, mentor and coach. Linda’s competencies and skills are currently focused on issues that include health related programme development in distance education, supporting teaching staff in responding to the pandemic, governance, statutory data returns, and the Teaching Excellence Framework.
