Revolution and counter-revolution in the 21st century

A conversation with Álvaro García Linera   

Álvaro García Linera is one of the most prominent figures of the social and political struggles in Latin America of the past thirty years. He has lived a number of distinct lives, with a strong revolutionary commitment throughout these: guerrilla fighter imprisoned by the Bolivian state in the mid-1990s, world-renowned Marxist theorist since the 2000s, Vice President of the Plurinational State of Bolivia under Evo Morales between 2006 and 2019, exiled to Mexico after the 2019 Bolivian coup. García Linera has worked both theoretically and practically on the intersection of Marxist perspectives and indigenous thought, with an emphasis on neocolonial strategies that include Latin American economies in the global market. He also developed a Marxist theory of the state and analysed the authoritarian twists of neoliberalism, while playing a leading role in the social and political life of his country.   

His presence in Paris will be an opportunity to take stock of revolutionary experiences and counter-revolutionary offensives of the first two decades of the 21st century. In this public conversation, we will be able to discuss the present historical and political conjuncture, tackling subjects that are crucial for the critical understanding of contemporary capitalism and the uprisings that are exploding within it.

Une conversation avec Álvaro García Linera 

Figure parmi les plus significatives des luttes sociales et politiques en Amérique latine de ces trente dernières années, Álvaro García Linera a vécu plusieurs vies, fort différentes entre elles, et cependant liées par un profond engagement révolutionnaire. Guerrillero emprisonné dans les geôles de l’État bolivien au milieu des années 1990 ; théoricien marxiste renommé à l’échelle mondiale depuis les années 2000 ; vice-Président de l’État Plurinational de Bolivie sous Evo Morales entre 2006 et 2019, exilé au Mexique à la suite du coup d’État bolivien de 2019 – García Linera a pu travailler, théoriquement et pratiquement, sur la rencontre entre perspectives marxistes et pensée indigène, en insistant sur les stratégies néo-coloniales qui incluent les économies latino-américaines dans le marché global. Il a aussi pu développer une théorie marxiste de l’État et des analyses des torsions autoritaires du néolibéralisme, tout en occupant un rôle de premier plan dans la vie sociale et politique de son pays. 

Sa présence à Paris sera l’occasion pour dresser un bilan des expériences révolutionnaires, et des offensives contre-révolutionnaires, dans les deux premières décennies du XXIème siècle. Dans le cadre d’une conversation publique, on pourra ainsi discuter de la conjoncture historique et politique présente, en abordant des sujets clivant pour la compréhension critique du capitalisme contemporain et des soulèvements qui explosent en son sein.
