Anthony Davis Collecting Prize 2019 now open

Date

The Anthony Davis book collecting prize is now open for submissions. Senate House Library and the Institute of English Studies offer a yearly prize to a student of the University of London for a themed collection of printed books and/or manuscript materials. The prize, now in its sixth year, is generously funded by Mr Anthony Davis, a graduate of the University of London.

The winner will get:

  • £600 plus an allowance of £300 to purchase a book for Senate House Library’s special collections in collaboration with library staff;
  • an opportunity to give a seminar on their winning collection within an Institute of English Studies seminar series;
  • to exhibit their winning collection in one of the historic Library rooms in Winter 2019

All undergraduates and postgraduates of the University, including its colleges, both part-time and full-time, are encouraged to enter.

Entries should be submitted by 5pm (GMT) on 21 April 2019 via e-mail to shl.officeadmin@london.ac.uk

Building your collection

Your collection must consist of not less than 10 printed and/or manuscript items reflecting a common theme, which the collector has deliberately assembled as the start of a collection and intends to grow.

The mission of the Anthony Davis prize is to encourage the collecting of books, printed and manuscript materials by students of the University at an early stage in their career so it is more focused on the vision, research and theme of the collection rather than the collection size, age and value.

Get some inspiration for your submission by reading the news story on last year’s prize winners; Musa Igrek from Goldsmiths’ College for his collection ‘Divine Power’ and Lucy Vinten Mattich, a MA student in archives, for her collection of household manuals from the 18th to the 20th centuries.
