Bedford College alumni celebrate 175th Anniversary with a visit to Senate House

Date

On 7 November, a group of alumni from Bedford College visited Senate House for a tour and a look at the Library’s archives.

Alumni of Bedford College (which merged with Royal Holloway University of London in 1985) have this year been celebrating 175 years since the founding of Bedford College.

The College was founded by Elizabeth Jesser Reid as a Higher Education college for women. Students from Bedford College were some of the first women to take the University of London Special Examination in 1869. Bedford College students also made up a large number of women who were the first to receive degrees, when the University of London became the first UK university to award degrees to women in 1878.

Guests enjoyed a welcome from Vice-Chancellor Professor Wendy Thomson CBE, a tour of Senate House Library, and a talk from Angharad Eyre – a researcher on the Library’s Anniversaries Project. Alumni had the opportunity to get a hands-on look at archive material relating to Bedford College’s students and their experiences as members of the University of London.

The event was one of a series of events organised by Royal Holloway and the Bedford Society for the 175th Anniversary celebrations this year.
