Foyle Foundation supports the Warburg Renaissance project
The Warburg Institute at the University’s School of Advanced Study has been awarded a grant of £150,000 from the Foyle Foundation towards the Warburg Renaissance project.
The project will transform the Warburg Institute, physically and intellectually, by restoring its original vision and making it ready for future generations. It will enhance the Institute’s academic resources, teaching facilities and public offerings, and create new facilities for special collections, exhibitions and events.
As well as enhancing existing initiatives to improve study and research facilities, the Warburg Renaissance project will also give the Institute new capacity for activities that were previously impossible. It will improve its spaces for collections, students, fellows and artists, and will introduce a much-needed public hub on the ground floor. The transformation will also create a greatly expanded lecture room and the Institute’s first gallery for physical and digital exhibitions, in turn realising Aby Warburg’s pioneering vision for an interdisciplinary cultural laboratory.
The donation from the Foyle Foundation brings the Warburg Institute close to achieving its £5 million fundraising target, enabling the project to proceed. Building work will commence in summer 2022 and is scheduled to take 18 months. The Institute will remain open throughout the refurbishment and will continue to welcome students on both its taught and MPhil/PhD programmes.
The Institute is sincerely grateful to the Foyle Foundation for their generosity, as well as the other trusts, foundations and individuals who have supported the Warburg Renaissance project.
