A message for the people of Lebanon
Our Pro Vice-Chancellor (International) Professor Mary Stiasny sends a message to the people of Lebanon.
The tragic blast at the port in Beirut on Tuesday (4 August) has seen 137 people lose their lives, with a further 5,000 people injured and 300,000 homes damaged according to reports. And yet this is not thought to be the final toll resulting from this disaster. All of us at the University of London have been enormously saddened to receive this news and send our heartfelt condolences to the people of Lebanon.
The University of London has close and highly valued ties with Lebanon, through its students and alumni as well as its Recognised Teaching Centre, the American University of Technology.
This is indeed a very difficult time for the people of Lebanon; we sympathise and appreciate how devastating it is for you all and the impact this disaster is having on the country, in addition to the economic crisis that has been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.
I am hopeful that the resilience of the people of Lebanon will see it through this devastating period, with support from the wider international community.
In the meantime, please accept our heartfelt condolences and stay safe.
With best wishes
Professor Mary Stiasny OBE
Pro Vice-Chancellor (International), University of London
