Passing of His Highness, the Aga Khan
The University of London is saddened to hear of the passing of His Highness, the Aga Khan.
His Highness - Prince Karim al-Hussaini, the Aga Khan IV and 49th hereditary imam of the Shia Ismaili Muslims –has been spiritual leader of the world’s Ismaili Muslims since the age of 20. A renowned philanthropist, His Highness donated billions of dollars towards the building of schools, homes and hospitals in countries including Pakistan and Bangladesh.
The University has many links with the Aga Khan Foundation, the Aga Khan Development Network, and the Aga Khan University. Vice-Chancellor Professor Thomson met with President Sulaiman Shahabuddin of Aga Khan University on her recent visit to Pakistan and former Pro-Vice Chancellor Mary Stiasny was part of the Chancellor’s Commission for the Aga Khan University in 2023.
Vice-Chancellor Wendy Thomson CBE said:
“The University of London is saddened to hear of the passing of His Highness, the Aga Khan. His loss will be felt by his family, the Ismaili Muslim community, and the wider world. He will be remembered as someone with a passionate commitment to education, philanthropy, and building bridges between the Islamic and wider world.”
His Highness passed away in Portugal surrounded by his family. He was 88.
