Date

On 7 May 2025, alumni, industry partners and students gathering in Dubai for an event highlighting the impact of global education on careers and society.

This flagship event was an opportunity to mark the University of London’s long-standing relationship with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and to celebrate the strengths of its alumni network. It was also a chance to discuss the impact of international qualifications on national development, talent readiness, and digital transformation in the UAE.

Alumni and guests of 33 different nationalities registered to attend the event, demonstrating the truly global nature of the University of London community.

We were delighted to be joined by a panel of esteemed speakers, who each brought their unique insights into global education, knowledge and collaboration. The panel featured Dr Wes Harry, Director of Human Capital at the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Knowledge Foundation, Dr Eesa Mohammed Al Bastaki, President of the University of Dubai, and Saima Hasan, Head of Marketing and Business Development at RIAA Barker Gillette Global Alliance and a University of London alumna.

Each of the panellists spoke about how global education opens doors - professionally, personally and socially – how it can transform lives. They discussed how, as well as boosting careers, it equips graduates with the skills to navigate diverse cultures, solve complex challenges and build bridges across borders.

Dr Eesa Mohammed Al Bastaki noted the growing importance of cross-border collaboration and stackable credentials:

Global partnerships in education are no longer optional – they’re essential. Microcredentials, dual degrees, and flexible learning options are shaping the way our students learn and contribute to the economy.

The panel also discussed some of the challenges that education is facing, including remaining sustainable and managing growth, as well as the challenges of AI and Machine Learning, and ensuring how social equity remains a priority.

Speaking at the event, Alistair Jarvis CBE, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Partnerships and Governance) at the University of London, said:

“In an increasingly connected and digital world, accessible global education is essential to building a skilled, resilient workforce. We’re proud to support the UAE’s ambitious goals by providing a flexible model that empowers learners to stay rooted in their community while earning internationally recognised qualifications.”

The event also celebrated the achievements of the University’s growing alumni community in the UAE, including barrister Hamna Zain, who was recently recognised as a finalist in the 2025 British Council Study UK Alumni Awards held in Dubai on 14 May.
