University of London awards honorary teaching degrees to Guernsey residents

Date

On 21 June 2024, the University was delighted to award honorary Bachelor of Education degrees to five former teachers at a special ceremony in Guernsey.

Those who received their honorary degrees studied at Furzedown College of Education or Stockwell College of Education, two of seven London-area teaching colleges that have since closed, but for whom the University of London was the awarding body.

In recent years, there has been a movement across the higher education sector for the thousands of individuals who received teaching certificates between the 1930s and the 1980s to be awarded honorary Bachelor of Education degrees at special ceremonies.

The University was pleased to be able to confer honorary awards to these five individuals, in honour of the impact they have made to the community in Guernsey, and beyond. They include Myrtle Tabel, who studied at Stockwell College of Education and was Headteacher at the infant school in Guernsey for 30 years. In 1999, Myrtle was awarded a CBE for services to education.

Jeffrey and Megan Bailey met at Furzedown College of Education in the 1970s. Speaking after the ceremony, they shared how it felt to be awarded with honorary degrees.

Addressing the honorary graduates at the ceremony, Pro Vice-Chancellor (International, Learning and Teaching), Professor Mary Stiasny OBE said:

“This event is a recognition from the University of London of the invaluable contributions you have made to the lives of the hundreds of thousands of children you have taught. On behalf of all those children, many of whom themselves will have become students at the University of London, thank you.”

Those honorary graduates from Guernsey are just some of the hundreds of former teachers who have been presented with honorary degrees by the University, to celebrate their dedication to teaching, and in recognition of the value of teaching certificates.

On 6 June 2024, the University held a ceremony at Senate House to confer Honorary Bachelor of Education degrees to over 350 former students.
