Zoom call online with many people

Since technology emerged, the landscape of education has transformed drastically. After the pandemic, the distance learning education sector was emphasised more than ever before. Now, gone are the days when students needed to be physically present on campus to ensure a quality education, or to foster friendships and create lasting memories. Today, technology has bridged the gap and nowhere is this more evident than in the online communities that have blossomed around our BSc Computer Science programme. This International Friendship Day, we celebrate the unique and meaningful connections that have formed within our University's virtual halls.

The digital campus: a global network of friends

When I first enrolled in the BSc Computer Science programme, I was apprehensive about the online learning environment. I was worried that the lack of face-to-face interaction would lead to a solitary educational experience. However, the programme’s vibrant online community on Slack quickly dispelled these fears. It became a virtual campus where students from diverse backgrounds from every corner of the globe converged, bringing with them a wealth of experiences, lifestyles and expertise.

From acquaintances to friends

Initially, our interactions were primarily academic, centred around discussions on coursework, assignments and projects. However, as time went on, these interactions evolved. What started as simple conversations about coding challenges or exam preparations, grew into deeper dialogues about our personal lives, cultures and aspirations. We began to share our stories, celebrate each other's successes and support one another through tough times.

Learning beyond the curriculum

One of the most enriching aspects of our online community has been the exchange of knowledge that goes beyond textbooks and lectures. Peers from different professional backgrounds bring in real-world insights and invaluable practical advice. Whether it was a student from India sharing their experience with a new programming language, or a peer from Brazil discussing the nuances of a particular technology in the industry, these interactions broadened our horizons and enriched our learning experience.

The value of diverse perspectives

The diversity within our Slack community has been a cornerstone of my growth. Engaging with peers from different cultures and walks of life has taught me empathy, respect and a broader understanding of the world. I’ve learned to appreciate the myriads of ways in which our fellow students approach problem-solving, navigate challenges and celebrate achievements. This diversity has not only enhanced my academic journey but also shaped me into a more well-rounded individual.

Expert advice and lifelong mentorship

Another incredible benefit of our online community has been the access to expert advice and mentorship. Alumni and industry professionals, who are part of the network, generously share their wisdom and experiences. Their guidance has been instrumental in helping me navigate my career and make informed decisions about my future. These mentors, though initially strangers, have become trusted advisors and friends, contributing significantly to my personal and professional growth.

A tribute to digital friendships

On this International Friendship Day, it is important to acknowledge and celebrate these digital friendships. They may not be traditional, but they are just as real and impactful. Our Slack community on the BSc Computer Science programme has proven that distance is no barrier to forming genuine connections. The friendships I have cultivated here have provided me with a support system, a sounding board and a network of individuals who genuinely care about each other's success and wellbeing.

Looking ahead

As I continue my journey on the BSc Computer Science programme and beyond, the bonds I’ve formed in our online community will remain a cherished part of my experience. These friendships are a testament to the power of technology to bring people together, transcend geographical boundaries and create meaningful connections.

This International Friendship Day, let us celebrate not just the friendships of the past, but also the potential for new ones. Let us continue to engage, share and support each other, knowing that in our digital campus, we are never alone.

Here’s to the friends we've made, and the friendships yet to come. Happy International Friendship Day to all!
