Balancing an LLB with other life commitments can be challenging, but with proper planning and organisation, it is manageable. The first step is to set clear priorities by identifying your most important commitments, such as work, family and health, and allocating time accordingly. Creating a structured study schedule is essential; you could use a calendar to plan your days and weeks, dedicating consistent time slots for studying, revision assignments, and reading.

It’s also helpful to make use of downtime effectively—I find it helpful to review notes, listen to legal podcasts, or read case summaries during commutes and short breaks. Setting realistic goals by breaking the syllabus into manageable sections and achieving weekly targets helps me keep on track. Make sure you also celebrate small accomplishments as this will boost your motivation. Staying organised with your study materials and tracking deadlines ensures efficiency, while leveraging support from family, friends or study groups can help reduce pressure significantly.

To prepare effectively for assessments, I make extensive use of the study support provided, such as the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), study guides and past papers. The VLE is invaluable for accessing lecture notes, recorded sessions and additional resources that consolidate my understanding of complex topics. Study guides help structure my revision by breaking down subjects into key themes and important principles, while past papers are essential for practicing exam techniques and familiarising myself with question formats and marking criteria.

I also use several study-assisting tools and apps to enhance my learning experience. Apps like Quizlet help me create digital flashcards for a quick review. Mind mapping apps, such as XMind, are excellent for organising legal concepts and linking cases, and platforms like Evernote help me keep my notes accessible and well-organised. Additionally, time management apps like Trello and Forest keep me focused and on track, adding an extra layer of productivity to my studies.

One of my favourite things about studying the LLB is how intellectually stimulating and diverse the subject matter is. The programme not only enhances my understanding of legal principles, but also develops my critical thinking, problem-solving and analytical skills. Engaging with real-world cases, understanding the intricacies of justice, and learning how the law evolves to shape society keeps me motivated and passionate about my studies. Additionally, the practical application of what I learn, combined with the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the legal field in the future, is incredibly rewarding and fulfilling.

Taking care of yourself is also vital while navigating the LLB. I find that getting adequate sleep, eating well, and incorporating exercise into my routine can enhance focus and energy. To prevent burnout, why not try including regular breaks in your study sessions and remaining flexible to adapt your schedule when life throws unexpected challenges your way. Above all, maintain focus on your long-term goals, and don’t let minor setbacks deter your progress. With determination, resilience, and the right strategies, you can balance your studies and other commitments effectively. One more thing: just keep moving forward, no matter what!
