Five tips to help you navigate your start to university
Starting your study journey is an exciting new step in your life. While there is lots to look forward to, you may feel a little out of your comfort zone. We’ve put together five tips to help you navigate your new chapter successfully.
1 Stay Organised
Create a system to keep track of your studies, assignments, and deadlines. Try using a planner, digital calendar, or apps to stay organized. You can fill in and personalise your own UoL Study Planner and set goals for the year ahead. Having a clear picture of your commitments will help you to manage your time effectively.
2 Step out of your comfort zone
Don't hesitate to put yourself out there and participate in social activities. There are lots of ways to connect with your student community, from joining study groups, clubs and societies, writing for the Student Blog, contributing to campaigns, and tuning into the World Class Podcast! Building a supportive network of peers will help you make your university experience more enjoyable.
3 Manage your time wisely
Set realistic goals, prioritise tasks, and create a study schedule that includes time for breaks and social activities. Explore our Time management study skill course, via student portal, to help you develop your skills to best organise the time you have available and focus on important tasks. Helping you to avoid feeling overwhelmed and maintain a healthy work-life balance.
4 Utilise our online resources
Take advantage of the resources available to you as distance and flexible learner. Have a look at the UoL Online Library which provides a range of online resources, e-books and professional support. Explore our range of Study skills which include topics such as academic writing, critical thinking, preparing for assessments, and more! We also have a diverse range of online careers support and events through the University of London Careers Service. These resources are designed to help you succeed and improve your employability.
5 Prioritise your wellbeing
University can be stressful and overwhelming at times. Don’t be afraid to seek help if you need it, whether it’s from friends, family or our University of London Wellbeing support. Our online, distance and flexible learners have access to TalkCampus (via UoL Portal), an app-based peer support network for students to give and receive mental health support. You can also explore our Wellbeing Toolkit (via VLE), where you can tailor make your own self-care plan that supports you to maintain your wellbeing.
Student life may bring new challenges and opportunities. Stay open to trying new things, exploring different subjects, and stepping out of your comfort zone. Remember that starting university is a journey, and it's okay to ask for help and take things one step at a time.
