Student Ambassador Ricco reflects on his remote learning experiences, tools, friendships and encouragement.

As I reflect on my journey at the University of London, I’m amazed at how the time has flown. It feels like just yesterday I was a prospective student, apprehensive about my upcoming degree. “Will I be able to finish the programme?”. This was a genuine thought of mine, especially considering Computer Science’s reputability for being “only for geniuses”. But here I am, in my final semester, developing my final project (a sweet arcade game), realising the endless possibilities that life has to offer when you take the leap!

I’ve learnt a lot over these past three years, dare I say much more practically than academically. Studying remotely forced me to up my self-discipline, adaptability and self-management game. To my surprise, it’s also made me a more sociable person, pushing me out of my comfort zone if I wanted to meet new people. It’s easier to just stay in one’s room all day, but not beneficial. I discovered this quote by Idowu Koyenikan which has stayed with me: “You must have a level of discontent to feel the urge to want to grow.” Growth is uncomfortable - and that’s a good thing.

When I started this degree in April 2022, everything was a bit chaotic. But, as I talked to fellow classmates, explored the university’s resources, and read the student blog (hey guys!), a certain structure started to develop. I learnt quickly that consistency was essential. Setting a specific study time, creating a designated study space, and using tools to help manage my workload became my routine. While there are endless study tips and resources out there, the game-changers for me have been Notion, Toggl and Focusmate. These tools helped me to take digital notes, enhanced time efficiency and enforced accountability. Check them out if you haven’t!

One of the most unexpected rewards of this remote endeavour has been the genuine friendships I’ve made along the way. I’ve met people from all around the world, all with the same goal - to finish this degree! From working together on projects, cheering each other on when assessments approached, or simple bantering, each has been a source of motivation and inspiration. We may be quick to forget, but these connections form the backbone of the journey. Remember, university (and life) is what you make of it. Be proactive! One of my favourite quotes comes from Bruce Lee: “If you love life, don’t waste time, for time is what life is made up of.”

My experience as a University of London Student Ambassador has added a special layer to my university life. I’ve had the opportunity to help new students navigate the same challenges I once faced and dip my toes into the world of content creation. I felt it only natural to help others, remembering how I too was helped. This has been greatly rewarding, as I see new students embarking on the university journey, hoping they feel just a little less alone.

I am deeply grateful to the University of London for the education and resources it provides, all with flexibility at the forefront. Yes, remote learning is different from a physical campus experience, but it’s by no means inferior! Education is a blessing - don’t waste it.

Looking back, this journey of mine has been fun, fearsome and full of twists all at once. Don’t be afraid to take the plunge and give it your all. Remember, “nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm!” (Ralph Waldo Emerson).
