Your online learning journey: eight essential study tips for success
Student Ambassador Tehmina shares the effective strategies she has developed to maintain consistency and self-motivation during her time as a University of London student.
Studying online at the University of London offers convenience, but distance learning also demands strong motivation and self-discipline. As a UoL student, I’ve developed effective strategies to maintain consistency and self-motivation. Here are my top eight study tips to help you thrive throughout your academic journey.
1. Kickstart your day
I find that starting my day early is essential for achieving a healthy study-life balance. Morning study sessions capitalise on heightened cognitive functions, as your mind is sharper after a good night's sleep. This optimal time allows for better concentration and memory recall, aided by natural sunlight and fewer distractions. Establish a structured daily regimen to track your study syllabus, live webinars, midterms, and final coursework submissions. I personally recommend using the UoL Study Planner, which helps create an organised timetable and facilitates proactive preparation, ensuring you stay ahead in your studies.
2. Balanced diets and workouts
Maintaining a balanced diet and engaging in regular workouts is crucial for optimal study performance. A diet rich in healthy proteins, fibre, and whole grains at every meal provides essential nutrients that boost energy and mental clarity. To counteract feelings of lethargy and mood swings, why not try incorporating workouts at the gym or refreshing walks into your routine. Exercise not only elevates your mood but also enhances cognitive function, aiding information retention. Additionally, staying hydrated is vital for sustaining energy levels and concentration.
3. Elevate your learning experience with online resources
The University of London offers online, distance and flexible learning students essential online resources to enhance their academic and career prospects. Utilise the UoL Online Library for access to millions of eBooks and research papers. The Careers VLE enriches your degree transcript, while Careers Connect helps you find global job opportunities. Career Set provides personalised CV reviews, Forage with various job simulations designed by world’s top employers, and eCareersGrad prepares you for interviews and case studies. Engaging with these tools will streamline your studies and boost your employability, empowering you throughout your educational journey. Don’t miss out on these invaluable resources.
4. Elevate your note-taking skills
Practise taking notes for your studies, as this skill is vital in today’s technological era. While artificial intelligence and digital tools are prevalent, handwritten notes can significantly enhance learning and memory. Research shows that writing by hand engages memory regions in the brain more effectively than typing, leading to improved recall of information and fostering greater focus and engagement during lectures. By incorporating handwritten notes into your routine, you not only strengthen your understanding of the material, but also create a more meaningful learning experience.
5. Seek expert support
If you feel overwhelmed, remember that you have a dedicated Online Tutor ready to assist you. By leveraging Tutor Forums and attending live webinars where available, you can access the guidance you need to navigate your studies confidently. If you are studying at a Recognised Teaching Centre, you can contact your tutors locally for support. Embrace this support system, and transform challenges into opportunities for growth.
6. Revitalise your horizons
Stepping outside of your usual study space can rejuvenate your learning experience. By exploring various libraries, study rooms and cafés around the local area, you not only enhance your focus and creativity but also make studying a more enjoyable adventure. So, grab your books, find a new spot, and let the world around you inspire your studies.
7. Connect and collaborate
Don’t miss the opportunity to make connections and friendships during your study journey. Each study session brings together diverse individuals from around the globe, so take the initiative to engage with your peers. Be open to helping others, as collaboration can enhance your learning experience. Remember, your classmates are on similar career paths, so starting conversations and seeking support not only fosters community but also enriches your academic journey.
8. Self care matters
Prioritising your health is essential, especially when juggling assignments, life, and deadlines. Stress can build up quickly, so recognise when you need a break or feel overwhelmed. Reach out to loved ones or friends for support, and utilise resources on the Wellbeing hub and TalkCampus, which provides confidential peer to peer assistance for mental health challenges. Remember to practice self-love and acknowledge your efforts; you are doing great! By putting your wellbeing first, you’ll enhance your resilience and focus, enabling you to approach your academic responsibilities with renewed energy and clarity.
In summary, studying online at the University of London requires motivation and self-discipline. To thrive, why not try starting your day early for better focus and memory or using the UoL Study Planner to organise your schedule. Maintain a balanced diet and regular movement to boost energy and mental clarity. Utilise online resources like the UoL Online Library and Careers VLE to enhance learning and employability. Handwritten notes improve retention, while your tutors provide essential support when you feel overwhelmed. Changing your study environment can spark creativity, and prioritising self-care is crucial for managing stress. Finally, connect with peers through study groups for shared insights and support.
