My SIM-UoL experience: a blend of scholarship, fun, and AI aspirations
Erine Tong is a third-year student in the BSc Computer Science (Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence) course from the University of London at the Singapore Institute of Management (SIM). She received the SIM Undergraduate Scholarship Award in recognition of her academic excellence and leadership potential.
A passion for sports technology
Back in high school, I was an art student, and I never would have imagined pursuing a Computer Science degree. The decision to take this path required a lot of courage and deep reflection. My interest in this field stems from its potential to transform lives, particularly in the realm of sports.
Having been actively involved in sports since a young age, I have witnessed many individuals suffering from over training and injuries. Machine learning and artificial intelligence can provide solutions by creating data-driven training plans and recovery strategies. This intersection of technology and sports fuels my passion for AI development.
Guiding motto: choices shape us
During this journey, one of the challenges I have faced is managing my time effectively while tracking my academic progress. My goal is not only academic success but also to cultivate a balanced life in friendships, health, mental well-being, and financial stability, which requires discipline and self-awareness. This phrase "What you choose, what you think, and what you do is who you become" strongly resonates with me and is my guiding motto. Over the years, I have developed better time management skills, learned to prioritise, and embraced adaptability to grow both academically and personally.
Developing leadership and communication skills
Furthermore, I actively engage in various activities at SIM which offers over 80 student clubs. As a student ambassador at SIM, I had the opportunity to participate and organise activities for the students.
I have honed my communication and leadership skills by sharing my experiences with prospective students during campus tours and outreach events. A key highlight was my appointment as the Engagement Director. I took on greater responsibilities by leading major initiatives such as the student ambassadors recruitment drive, mass training, and team-building events. In this role, I conducted interviews of new students applying to be Student Ambassadors, planned and organised training sessions for them to foster active engagement through fun, interactive team-building activities. Moreover, I also had the opportunity to attend overseas leadership training in Indonesia.
Furthermore, I conducted a student-sharing session in Johor, Malaysia, where it pushed me out of my comfort zone. As a Peer Mentor, I contribute to mental health initiatives by organising wellness events and conducting peer support sessions for students. These experiences have made me realise how fortunate I am to be a part of such a supportive community.
Ambitions in AI Development: a scholarship’s impact
Receiving this scholarship has provided me with immense motivation, encouraging me to do my best rather than try my best. It represents a strong vote of confidence in my potential, allowing me to focus on my studies and extracurricular activities while reminding me of my responsibilities as a scholar at SIM.
Upon graduation, my goal is to work in AI development labs. I aim to apply my knowledge and skills to improve lives, especially in sports science, where AI can have a tangible impact on preventing injuries and enhancing performance. In the long term, I hope to contribute to AI research addressing societal challenges and pursue a career in academia, mentoring and inspiring future generations of AI professionals.
Embracing growth and resilience
Reflecting on my journey, I am deeply grateful for the opportunities and challenges that have shaped me as a student and a leader. The scholarship has been a stepping stone towards realising my dreams, enabling me to focus on my academic and personal development while giving back to the community.
My advice is to believe in yourself, stay committed, embrace growth opportunities, and never be afraid to seek help when needed. With resilience and dedication, the path to success is within reach.
