Wellbeing advice from our Student Ambassadors
Student life is exciting and full of opportunity, but it can also be challenging. Balancing studies, personal responsibilities and life transitions can take a toll on your mental and emotional health. That’s why it’s so important to prioritise your wellbeing.
To help you along the way, our Student Ambassadors share how they care for their own wellbeing, what works for them, and how they make space for self-care in their daily lives. From journaling to gardening, these personal tips reflect the many ways you can build balance, resilience and joy into your student experience.
Maheen, Laws (LLB), Pakistan
“Taking care of myself during intense study sessions isn't just a routine, it's my survival guide! Balancing productivity with downtime keeps me feeling sharp and sane. One of my go-to stress-busters is journaling. Each evening, armed with a colourful pen (because life is too short for boring ink!), I spend about fifteen minutes scribbling thoughts, reflecting on my day, or jotting down little things I'm grateful for. This mini therapy session helps clear my head and reminds me to celebrate even tiny wins.”
"Breaks are another non-negotiable for me. Rather than mindlessly scrolling my phone, I step outside for a quick walk or do some yoga stretches (my back thanks me every time!) These bursts of movement not only combat fatigue but also refuel my motivation.
Music is my constant study companion. I've crafted playlists for every mood imaginable; energetic hits to boost motivation, ambient tracks for deep focus, and calming melodies for winding down post-study. Honestly, a good playlist turns even the toughest study session into a personal concert!”
Shruti, Cyber Security (MSc), India
“My favourite way to unwind and relieve stress is organising a movie night with my family. I often rewatch films because sometimes the predictability and knowing what comes next is much more relaxing than diving into something new. I also rewatch my favourite TV shows!"
"Another hobby I love to indulge in is gardening. Gardening will always give you something to look forward to. Maybe the flowers are blooming, maybe the plants have new leaves, maybe the seed you planted is finally germinating! Even if there's nothing new, I weed out the grass or clean up dead leaves. There is something so relaxing about interacting with Mother Nature and feeling the earth in your hands.
I hope something here helps others when they are looking for ways to unwind. I would always recommend talking to someone, especially via the University's TalkCampus platform when you are in need. Here's to hoping for a healthy study-work-life balance for everyone!”
Hridoy, Laws (LLB), Bangladesh
“As a law student and someone deeply involved in the fashion industry, life often feels like a high-speed treadmill. To keep my mind in check, I’ve created my own rhythm. Oddly enough, my go-to stress relief is cooking. There’s something healing about turning raw ingredients into something delicious; it’s like creating order out of chaos, one dish at a time."
"I’ve also learned the magic of small pauses. A five-minute reset, a walk, or even a deep breath between tasks can do wonders. Mental health isn’t something I wait to fix; it’s something I actively protect.
Balance isn’t always easy, but I’ve found my way of making it personal, intentional, and even a little creative.”
Shameem Khalef, Laws (LLB), Malaysia
“To unwind and manage stress while studying, I often turn to music, it helps me reset mentally and emotionally, whether I’m listening to something calm while revising or upbeat to lift my mood."
"Going out with friends is another way I take care of my mental health. Even a short catch-up or walk with them gives me a break from the pressure of law school and reminds me to keep balance in my life. Those moments of connection and joy help me return to my studies with a clearer mind and renewed motivation.”
