"The best library for classics in all of Europe": my PhD at the School of Advanced Study
Our recent graduate Guiseppe "Joey" Ficoccelli talks about how he moved to another country to do his doctorate degree and why he chose the School of Advanced Study for it.
Joey Ficoccelli came from Montreal, Canada, to London to pursue his PhD in Classics at the Institute of Classical Studies. On the day of his graduation, he reflected on what led him to this decision and how he found these past few years in London.
Why the School of Advanced Study
I studied Roman history and I wrote a thesis on the intersection of economic and political power in the Roman Republic. I actually met my supervisor at a conference, and we spoke about my topic. He said: ‘Why don't you come to London to study?’ At the time, I had no idea that was going to happen. I had other cities in mind, and it happened just spontaneously.
In the end, what really pushed me over the line was that the Institute of Classical Studies (ICS) really is the centre of classics in the UK. It has the best library for classics, maybe in all of Europe. So, it was almost a no-brainer, between the supervisor’s advice and the library.
The Institute of Classical Studies really is the centre of classics in the UK.
London as the heart of academic community
I'd say that my favourite thing was that because the ICS is a relatively small institute, I got to meet everyone and know everyone on a first-name basis. It was a really intimate group, and that kind of made it feel like a home away from home.
On a more professional side, everyone really came to the ICS, especially PhD students and scholars from around London, and then even the UK, Europe, and abroad. I felt like I was really in the centre of the action – I didn't have to really move, and everyone just came to me. It felt very weird in that respect, but I loved it. I met so many people.
Advice for prospective students
I would say, I know that working from home is great, but honestly, try your best to go in as much as possible. Some of the best moments, both on a personal side and on a professional side, happen organically, spontaneously. It always happens here. Sometimes productivity is not measured in just how much you wrote or how much you read. It's measured in other things - meeting people, having conversations.
Plans after the PhD
I would consider staying in London. It's a great city. If an opportunity arises, I will definitely take it. My hope is to teach and write on Roman history, but for me, I think, all doors are open.
