Boosting my career in logistics with an MSc in Supply Chain Management
Ioannis Vasilonikolos, from Greece, recently graduated from the online MSc Supply Chain Management and Global Logistics with the University of London. He shared how embarking on a degree after two decades in the industry helped him sharpen his skills, build global connections, and take the next step toward senior leadership.
The MSc Supply Chain Management and Global Logistics is designed by academic experts at City St George’s, University of London, and provides a strong theoretical and practical foundation in modern logistics and supply chain strategy.
Ideal for working professionals, the programme can be studied flexibly online, either as a full MSc or as a Postgraduate Diploma or Certificate. For Ioannis, it was the academic boost he needed to complement his experience and pursue his career ambitions.
Choosing a master’s
This was my first degree since high school – I had been working in logistics for about 20 years, first in food production and later for freight forwarders. I wanted to move into upper management, but I realised that experience alone wasn’t enough to reach my goals.
So, I decided to pursue a master’s degree in something closely related to logistics and supply chain management. It turned out to be the perfect match for me.
Building connections as a distance learner
I studied independently at first, and it felt a bit isolating. But then we started a WhatsApp group, which helped us connect and form friendships over time. It began to feel like I really knew these people.
It was a new and interesting experience, especially during COVID. We connected with students from all over the world. Since most of us were working professionals, it was fascinating to see how people from different backgrounds approached and solved the same problems.
We had lectures from our professors, notes, textbooks, and access to a virtual library where we could find papers and resources for our assignments. It helped me focus and apply my existing experience and skills in a more academic and professional way.
Academic growth and career confidence
The most surprising thing I learned was that I’m good at accounting! Initially, I found the module intimidating and almost didn’t go through with it. But it ended up being very enjoyable – and it was actually the highest grade I got in the entire programme.
Now, I can see that my CV has become more attractive to recruiters. Even though I’m not actively looking for a job, people are reaching out to me because I now have a degree.
To anyone considering the degree, I would say: just go for it. It’s a great programme; very flexible and suitable for working professionals or those with family obligations. You can tailor your study schedule to your needs.
For me, this is the culmination of a very fulfilling three years.
