“I was able to secure a job before graduating”: how a Computer Science degree jump-started my career
Haider Ali studied BSc Computer Science at a Recognised Teaching Centre in Pakistan and came to London to attend his graduation ceremony. On the day, he shared his experience studying with the University of London and how the degree helped him secure a job.
There were a multitude of reasons that led me to pursue this degree, primarily the quality of education. I needed a degree in a rapidly evolving field, with the flexibility to study remotely. Additionally, one of the major factors for me was the connectivity and exposure to students worldwide. I could gain technical expertise from people from various backgrounds, and I could be on par with others when I stepped into the professional field. There would be no challenge that I could not overcome.
Academic and personal support
The most surprising thing about this degree was the level of support the University of London offered, ranging from academic support from tutors to the assistance provided by other staff members. The University of London has its own support team, available 24/7 to students worldwide, and I've received logistical and academic support in all kinds of matters; for example, career services and mental health support.
Global network and opportunities
The different channels the University of London offered allowed me to engage with students that I might not otherwise have met and to form lifelong friendships across the globe. The primary platform for us was Slack, along with discussion forums, webinars and student-led events. There were students everywhere, from newcomers to alumni. Everyone was present.
The courses were kept up to date, with new information available on a daily basis, which is especially relevant in a field like computer science. When I stepped into the work environment, there were no surprises. I was actually able to secure a job before graduating. My plan is to pursue a master’s degree now; and I'm also working on a start-up of my own in the AI field.
Advice for prospective students
The advice I would give to prospective students is that, throughout this degree, you’ll face many challenges. There are tough subjects, long nights of studying, and moments when you might doubt yourself and your abilities.
But once you’re finally done and take a look back, it’s one of the most incredible experiences you’ll have. The educational aspect of it is just insanely exceptional – it teaches you a lot of things, from life to your own field.
