“I’m well-equipped to change the laws in my home country”

Date

Devi St Luce, an alumna of the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, reflects on her decision to pursue a master’s in Drafting Legislation, Regulation, and Policy and her experience at the School of Advanced Study.

Devi St. Luce travelled to London from the Commonwealth of Dominica to celebrate her graduation in 2024. Here, she shares what motivated her to study an LLM in this area and how she hopes her degree will help her make a difference back home.

Choosing the LLM in Drafting Legislation, Regulation, and Policy

I decided to study my master's in drafting because it's a key area in my country that's underdeveloped, and not a lot of people study that area. So, in order to give back to my country, I decided to study an area that's well needed. I also want to focus on child laws, amending domestic violence laws, and by studying that, I'm going back well-equipped to change the laws of my country.

In order to give back to my country, I decided to study an area that's well needed.

Career opportunities in legal drafting

The most surprising thing that I learned is that there are many opportunities for drafters, especially consultancy. A lot of drafters get to travel and draft laws for each government. Once you study your master’s, you're able to branch out into different fields and different areas.

Close-knit academic community

The favourite thing about my programme was my lecturers. They're very hands-on, they give you a lot of practical experience and most of them have their PhDs, so they know what they're talking about. And being around people who have studied their doctorate makes you want to be more successful in the field.

Advice for prospective students

My advice would be to come in with an open mind because there are lots of new things to learn. You're coming from a legal background, but drafting is very different, and specific. You need to listen to your lecturers, get advice, do your research – and come and have fun!

I would recommend my degree because it's a degree that will bring you far. It's very specific, and you get a lot of hands-on experience. The lecturers and even the library staff are willing to help. When you're doing your research, they will tell you: “Yes, you can get from that article.” Everybody's willing to assist.
