Faculty and staff from London and Singapore witness a joyous online graduation
Ms Cynthia Asio reports on a virtual graduation ceremony attended by SIM-UoL graduands from both the Class of 2019 and Class of 2020.
The long-awaited graduation for SIM–UoL students finally took place from 14 to 16 April 2021. Over three days, six virtual ceremonies were presented via YouTube Live Streaming. Instead of waiting for the opportune time to hold a physical graduation, SIM went online, allowing 3,700 graduates who took their last University of London assessment in 2019 and 2020 to graduate!
As it would have been if we could have met, faculty and staff from London and Singapore witnessed the online graduation. In fact, having it virtual meant that many more could witness the event. The sessions were joyous as there was much chatter and congratulatory messages in the Live Chat.
SIM faculty rounded up the virtual graduation with words of encouragement and inspiration for the graduates.
Gracing the occasion was the British High Commissioner to Singapore, Her Excellency Kara Owen CMG CVO. Representing the University of London was the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Wendy Thomson CBE, and representing the London School of Economics and Political Science was its Director, Baroness Minouche Shafik.
The SIM scorecard saw a whopping 549 First Class Honours graduates and a combined 113 top student awards for both the Class of 2019 and 2020. Scholarships were also presented to alumni to further their chartered accountancy qualifications.
At each of the six graduation sessions, an alumni representative gave the closing speech on behalf of the student cohort. Ms Shiffana Farhath Kuthubudeen, Class of 2020, expressed her gratitude to her parents in the Tamil language. All, like Mr Rivik Paul who graduated in 2019, reminisced about their learning journey at SIM and gave thanks to lecturers and loved ones for supporting them.

Ms Cynthia Asio is Senior Executive at the Singapore Institute of Management. Among other things, she coordinates the top student awards for the graduation. SIM celebrates 35 years of partnership with the University of London this year. There are currently 5,500 students enrolled across 31 programmes. To date, over 40,000 have completed a UoL qualification from SIM.
