Koh Jia Xiang graduated from the BSc Computer Science programme at the Singapore Institute of Management (SIM) in 2023. He currently works as an Engineer at Scoot, a Singaporean airline. Here, he reflects on his studies and career to date and shares some industry insights.

Background

I majored in Digital Animation during my time studying for a diploma, which sparked an interest in the technical aspects of the digital arts. Based on this interest, I applied and enrolled in the BSc Creative Computing programme, but decided to transfer to the Computer Science programme in my second year when the opportunity presented itself. My curriculum in the Computer Science programme focused on industry tools and emerging technologies, including web and mobile development as well as machine learning.

Experience at SIM-UoL

Much of my studies occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic, which required me to adapt my learning methods to suit online education. This experience fostered my sense of independence and responsibility for my own learning, enabling me to continuously acquire knowledge outside the classroom. I believe this is an important trait in the workforce, especially when encountering unfamiliar information.

Mr Aaron Yeo, one of my lecturers at SIM, left an indelible imprint on me due to his ability to educate and assist students. He would personally provide guidance and resolve students’ concerns, even when the issues went beyond the scope of the module. This was extremely helpful and heartening as each person may require different approaches to comprehend and acquire knowledge, which Mr Aaron Yeo did not hesitate in providing.

During my course of study, I also completed a self-sourced internship at the Home Team Science and Technology Agency (HTX). This exposed me to mobile and machine learning technologies, which allowed me the opportunity to develop not just theoretical solutions, but ones with a real world impact.

Career journey

I currently work as an Engineer at Scoot, developing applications for flight operations such as digital solutions that are utilised by cabin and flight crew. When I first joined the company, I had to pick up unfamiliar tools on the job. Fortunately, the amiable environment and mentoring from colleagues helped me to adapt. It was challenging but I learned that persistence and collaboration with my peers are the keys to overcoming any obstacles at work.

With my work focusing on web and mobile applications, the modules from my BSc Computer Science programme provided relevant and useful knowledge that I apply daily. The practice I acquired in database design has also prepared me well for implementing effective data structures in my projects.

Industry insights

However, staying current with industry trends and adopting efficient development practices is also crucial. Increasingly, companies are trying to develop applications to improve employee productivity. These solutions are usually internal facing and require rapid rollout periods. Low-code solutions have been growing in popularity due to their lower barrier to entry, which helps to accelerate implementation and results. Such solutions are part of my toolbox and help me in my daily work. Occasionally, application features need to be updated and enhanced to meet business needs. Having the foresight to accommodate changes, whether large or small, is integral.

The technology field is fast-paced and always evolving, as it should be. To stay abreast of the latest developments, I regularly update myself through technical news platforms and social media. Certifications and training are also relevant avenues for upgrading my skills. My company also regularly hosts workshops on new technologies, such as generative AI, to ensure employees are well-versed in the latest trends.

Advice and reflections

The BSc Computer Science programme equips students with a strong foundation highly relevant to the demands of the technology field. Its diverse range of specialisations enables students to tailor their studies to their unique interests, fostering the development of specialised skills and expertise.

On other fronts, SIM provides a holistic experience enriched by a plethora of student life activities. From peer support initiatives to career fairs and special interest clubs, I found enrichment not only in academic pursuits but also in other aspects. The beauty of learning is that a person becomes open to improvement, which ensures that one keeps up with the latest subject matter. This drive to improve becomes the key to success in life.
