Whatever your industry, whatever your role, financial management skills are likely to be critical if you want to progress in your career. Whether it’s managing a budget, or contributing to key strategic decision-making, having a solid foundation in accounting, finance and governance is a fundamental expectation of any manager. But what do you do if that’s not your background? The University of London offers the ideal programme for you.

A team meeting.

The MSc Accounting and Financial Management is a finance programme with a difference. With academic direction from UCL’s world-renowned School of Management, this master’s level programme gives you a broad understanding of the core areas of accounting and financial management – from financial analysis to corporate governance, risk and decision making, and investment management. But unlike other, similar programmes, you do not need any prior knowledge or experience in accounting or finance.

So whether you want to accelerate your current career or switch industries, this programme will give you the solid framework you need to get ahead.

I’m seeing real diversity, not only among the students but also among the tutors. They come from very varied backgrounds and they bring that diverse experience to their teaching which is very advantageous.

Samuel Aisabokhae joined the programme recently. Based in Dubai, Samuel has worked previously for Diamond Developers, a leading sustainable development manager-firm, known for ‘The Sustainable City’ brand. In his current role as Senior Consultant (Strategy & Sustainability) for AJMS Global Consulting, he has become particularly interested in sustainable finance. But he was looking for a master’s programme that would balance the skills he needs in finance and management.

Samuel said: “I needed a programme that was flexible enough to be incorporated into my very tight schedule. In my previous studies I’ve been used to attending live classes but with the MSc, they are all pre-recorded. It’s great, it means that as a busy professional you can fit it into your schedule at a time that suits you, and you can rewind the recordings to get more clarity on any grey areas. It also means people in different time zones around the world can all access the same content.”

The programme is designed to give students an understanding of how the principles of accounting and financial management can be applied to all areas of business, from both an operational and a strategic perspective. It also aims to cover additional, specialist issues, including ‘Capital markets and global perspectives’ and ‘Analysing risk for decision making’.

It’s a go-to for anybody who wants to study accounting and financial management.

Samuel already has an undergraduate degree in Economics and he is an ACCA Affiliate. But he emphasised that the programme is highly beneficial to students whatever their background.

“Whatever stage you’re at, whether you’ve just completed your bachelor’s degree or you come through the ACCA route, this programme will suit you. It simplifies complex topics into easily understandable modules and gives a lot of practical examples as well. It would suit students at any stage of their career and I would say it’s a go-to for anybody who wants to study accounting and financial management.

“The study materials are concise, which makes it student-friendly and approachable. The Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) is also great – it’s like a community on its own. Students are really active in engaging – making suggestions and contributions on different topics. It also allows you to see the whole module overview as well as the week-by-week breakdown.”

The academics who have designed and teach on the programme modules are from the world-renowned School of Management at UCL. Many have long careers not only as teachers but also as professionals working in key accounting and finance roles at a global level.

Samuel said: “A big selling point was the reputation of University of London and UCL – both very high-ranking universities. I’m also seeing real diversity, not only among the students but also among the tutors. They come from very varied backgrounds and they bring that diverse experience to their teaching, which is very advantageous.”

Gain the skills you need for the next step in your career with the University of London’s MSc Accounting and Financial Management.
