How my MSc Computer Science helped me transition into the world of tech

Date

Before pursuing an MSc Computer Science, Mireia Taboada Zapatero worked in microbiology. She graduated from the University of London with Distinction, and on the day of her ceremony, reflected on the most interesting and useful aspects of her programme.

Study experience

The most surprising thing that I learned is the power of knowing how to research in tech. There's always something new, and it can feel quite overwhelming, especially when coming from a different field. But once you know how to find the right information, it becomes a lot more manageable, and even exciting, to learn new things all the time.

My favourite thing about the programme was the final project. It gave me an opportunity to dive into a topic that I was interested in, which is the use of machine learning in optimising business operations. I really enjoyed building a functional solution from scratch.

Support and resources

I studied independently; there were many resources available to us. First of all, each module came with lectures, exercises, and reading materials. Each module had a graded final assignment; some modules had smaller graded assignments throughout the term. Tutors were available to answer questions, and the online library was an excellent resource.

We were encouraged to connect with other students in several ways. There were discussion channels where lecturers suggested discussion points each week, and modules with group work. There were also unofficial Discord channels where students shared their experiences.

Why choose the University of London

I would recommend the University of London to anybody. The flexibility is incredible – I was able to complete the master’s degree in the minimum time while working full-time. The modules are very practical, so you gain real-world skills. And then of course there's the University’s long-standing academic reputation.

The programme helped me build a very strong foundation in core computer science concepts and key areas of software engineering. It also gave me hands-on experience in the currently relevant areas of tech, like machine learning, cloud computing, and security. Just as importantly, it gave me the confidence to navigate the tech world.

I've now been working as a software developer for over three years, and I feel like with the master’s, new opportunities will arise for me to take on more complex challenges and continue growing within the software engineering field.

My advice to prospective students is to stay focused on why you started when things get tough.
