The University of London’s latest Student Experience initiative is the launch of online student societies, the first of which is a University of London Book Club.

Launch of the University of London Book Club

Broadening academic knowledge, developing skills and, ultimately, obtaining a world-class qualification are key motivations for undertaking university education. When asking graduates about their experience, however, much of their focus is on the social activities that are a cornerstone of student life.  At the University of London, we know how important it is to foster a sense of connection among our global student community. That’s why we are always exploring how technology can facilitate social experiences for our distance and flexible learners living in 190 countries.

The Book Club will be a place of discussion and debate, open to all University of London distance learning students.

The University of London’s next Student Experience initiative is the launch of online student societies. You can access the Clubs and Societies page via the Student Portal. This is an opportunity for distance learning students to connect with their peers around the world. Would you like to get to know like-minded people who share your extracurricular interests, from sport to politics, art and literature? Now you can, by joining an online student society! The initiative will begin with the launch of the University of London Book Club, the first in a portfolio of online societies. The Book Club will be a place of discussion and debate, open to all University of London distance learning students.

Our vision is for online societies to become hubs of interaction between students. Whether you are studying in Singapore or the UK, in Canada or Pakistan, online student societies are open to you. These will be accessible spaces that we hope will allow students to form genuine friendships. In addition to our social media profiles (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram), where we share content from and for students, online student societies will be another University of London digital social experience.

What’s next?

The interests of our students are wide-ranging, and the plan is for our online society provision to reflect this as much as possible. With that in mind, the launch of the University of London Book Club will be followed by the introduction of a society with an entirely different focus, so look out for further updates! The online societies page within the VLE can be accessed by going to the Student Portal and clicking the Study Support tab.
