Professor Mary Stiasny International Scholarship for Psychology
The University of London has launched a new global award, the Professor Mary Stiasny International Scholarship for Psychology, in direct support of the University’s mission to transform lives and societies around the world through the power of education.
The scholarship is named in honour of Professor Mary Stiasny OBE – the University's Pro Vice-Chancellor (International, Teaching and Learning) – who retired in June 2024.
The scholarship provides three awards of £7,000 towards the cost of the BSc Psychology programme fees. One award will be made for the April 2025 intake and two further awards will be made for the October 2025 intake.
Please note: The scholarship does not cover the full programme fee, and the successful recipients will be required to make a partial payment at each payment stage or a combined payment at the first point of registration (whichever is preferred). Full details will be sent to the recipients when the award is confirmed.
Further Information
To be eligible for this scholarship you must:
- Hold an offer of a place on the BSc Psychology programme via the online / independent study route only. (Students studying the programme at a recognised teaching centre are not eligible to apply for the scholarship).
- Be a new student commencing the programme in the April 2025 intake
- Not already possess a first degree
- Explain the impact that the scholarship will have on your ability to successfully complete the degree
- Can confirm that the cost of the fees that are not covered by the scholarship can be covered
- Submit a programme application form online. Online applications are located on the BSc Psychology programme webpage. You must complete the scholarship section of the application form to state your interest in the Mary Stiasny Psychology Scholarship.
Please note: A non-refundable programme application fee is required for this programme and will not be waived as part of the scholarship.

Applicants must complete all sections of the application form –
- Confirm that you hold an offer of a place
- Declare your intended study mode
- Explain the impact that the scholarship will have on your ability to successfully complete the degree
- Complete a supporting statement which answers the following three questions.
· Why have you chosen to study this programme?
· Tell us how the award of the scholarship will result in positive benefit to your community, profession or society in the future.
· Tell us how the financial support this award provides will help you to study this programme.
Each answer must be no more than 100 words. Applications which exceed the wordcount will be automatically rejected.

The deadline for scholarship applications to be received for the April intake award is 6th March 2025 (17:00 GMT)
Applicants are responsible for ensuring that their applications for admission to the BSc Psychology programme are submitted sufficiently early and with all required supporting documents so that an offer can be made and their subsequent scholarship application entered before the deadline.
Details of the application opening and deadline dates for the October 2025 intake awards will be available after the April award has been made.
The following terms and conditions apply to the Professor Mary Stiasny International Scholarship for Psychology at the University of London.
1. The Professor Mary Stiasny International Scholarship for Psychology is available for the University of London BSc Psychology programme taught via the distance learning/independent study route only.
2. You cannot be considered for the Professor Mary Stiasny International Scholarship for Psychology if you are a currently registered student.
3. The recipient will be responsible for paying the remaining part of the programme fee not covered by the award. The Professor Mary Stiasny International Scholarship for Psychology will be applied against all programme fees payable to the University of London including initial registration fees and module fees. The Scholarship will not cover any external assessment related costs payable to assessment centres or the British Council or any other fees not payable to the University of London, such as teaching centre fees and study materials.
4. The Professor Mary Stiasny International Scholarship for Psychology may be awarded in addition to other scholarships and funding, but it cannot be used in conjunction with any other University of London award.
5. The Professor Mary Stiasny International Scholarship for Psychology may be reviewed on an annual basis and cannot be transferred to another individual.
6. Students awarded a Professor Mary Stiasny International Scholarship for Psychology but who subsequently withdraw from their course of studies will no longer be eligible for the award.
7. Recipients of the Professor Mary Stiasny International Scholarship for Psychology may take a break in their studies but must undertake a minimum of two examinations every year for the programme on which they are registered. Failure to do so will result in the award being withdrawn.
8. The Professor Mary Stiasny International Scholarship for Psychology will be valid for the maximum period of registration for your programme.
9. The University reserves the right to terminate the Professor Mary Stiasny International Scholarship for Psychology if you are found to have omitted key information or have provided untrue, inaccurate, incomplete or fraudulent information on your application form or in any additional information provided to the University and used in the determination of your award.
10. You agree to abide by the rules and regulations of the University of London. If you do not abide by these rules and regulations, or if you do not meet the requirements (including the academic requirements) to continue or complete the distance learning course, the University reserves the right to withdraw the Professor Mary Stiasny International Scholarship for Psychology with immediate effect.
11. You undertake to use your best efforts to fulfil the academic requirements of the distance learning course on which you are registered.
12. As part of the Professor Mary Stiasny International Scholarship for Psychology award, the University may ask you to participate in marketing-related activities and/or events to promote and share your experiences of the Scholarship. You are under no obligation to undertake any of these activities. Examples of typical activities and/or events may include participating in an interview, and providing a profile for the University website. If you participate in such activities and/or events, you agree for the University to use any material resulting from such activities and/or events for the purposes of publicity material and/or for the education of other students, whether electronically or in print. You furthermore release and discharge the University and its agents, representatives and assignees from any and all claims and demands arising out of or in connection with the use of the publicity material, including without limitation any and all claims for invasion of privacy and defamation. Additionally, you agree that the copyright of any publicity material shall be wholly vested in the University and you hereby assign to the University any and all rights in the publicity material.
13. Each year you will be asked to provide a report outlining the impact of your study and research – this is a requirement of being a scholarship recipient. This report will be shared with the University of London’s Development Office which will share the report (having removed all relevant contact details) with the Donors of the Professor Mary Stiasny International Scholarship for Psychology. Failure to provide the report results in the withdrawal of your award.
14. By agreeing to these Terms and Conditions, you are giving the University the right to hold and process your personal data, including some sensitive personal data. The University will process this personal data (including any personal data provided as part of participation in a marketing-related activity and/or event under clause 16) in accordance with the UK Data Protection legislation and the University’s Data Protection Policy. The University will only share data with third parties in accordance with its Data Protection Policy and the University will remain the data controller of the data. The Data Protection Policy is applicable from the time of accepting these Terms and Conditions.
15. The University of London and any relevant Federation Member are separate legal entities. In accepting the Professor Mary Stiasny International Scholarship for Psychology you agree to the sharing of your personal data between the University and a Federation Member (where relevant) for the purposes of the management of your award.
16. Each of the clauses of these Terms and Conditions operate separately. If a clause or any part of a clause is or becomes invalid, illegal or unenforceable, it shall be deemed deleted, but that shall not affect the validity and enforceability of the rest of these Terms and Conditions which shall remain in full force and effect.
17. These Terms and Conditions constitute the entire agreement between you and the University in relation to the Professor Mary Stiasny International Scholarship for Psychology. All previous agreements, arrangements and understandings between you and the University relating to the Professor Mary Stiasny International Scholarship for Psychology, whether written or oral, shall have no legal effect unless expressly set out in these Terms and Conditions.
18. If the University fails to insist that you perform any of your obligations under these Terms and Conditions, or if the University does not enforce its rights against you, or if the University delays in doing so, that will not mean that the University has waived its rights against you and that will not mean that you do not have to comply with those obligations. If the University waives a default by you of the Professor Mary Stiasny International Scholarship for Psychology, the University will only do so in writing, and that will not mean that it will automatically waive any later default by you.
19. These are the Terms and Conditions between you and the University. No other person shall have any rights to enforce any of the terms of these Terms and Conditions.
20. These Terms and Conditions, and any matters arising out of or in relation to these Terms and Conditions, are governed and construed in accordance with English law. The parties agree to submit to the exclusive jurisdiction of the English courts to settle any dispute or claim arising out of or in relation to these Terms and Conditions
