Empowering tomorrow’s leaders: Engaging students in real-world policy making
Our new Consultant Policy Fellow, Domenica Avila Luna, describes her ambitions for student engagement.
At LRaPP, we see students not merely as participants in academia but as architects of knowledge and drivers of better policy. Reflecting London’s extraordinary diversity, students bring fresh and innovative perspectives and lived experiences that are vital for effective, inclusive policymaking.
Our new Student Engagement work stream is built on the conviction that student voices are a catalyst for genuine knowledge mobilisation between universities and the policy world. We’re developing clear, evidence-based pathways that connect students at every level with decision-makers - from the Greater London Authority and London Councils to third-sector partners - in ways that benefit everyone involved.
Together with students, knowledge mobilisers, researchers, and policymakers, we’re co-designing, producing evidence, piloting, and evaluating a range of engagement schemes: dissertation projects tailored to London’s needs, PhD placements embedded within policymaking teams, internships and work placements that yield tangible outcomes, and Consultation panels and youth boards.
This is just the beginning - stay tuned for more updates as we build a vibrant community of student-led knowledge exchange.
