In the Grip of Change: The Caribbean and its British Diaspora” is moving online

“In the Grip of Change” explores the grand sweep of history by tracing the path of British Caribbean colonies to independence, the experiences of those who moved from the Caribbean to Britain prior to 1973 as British subjects, the lead up to the Windrush Scandal, and transnational activism.

The moving exhibition includes a vibrant range of materials from the library's Caribbean and Black history collections: items on display at the physical exhibition included pamphlets, posters, newspapers, comics, calypsos, poetry and badges. Many of these have now been digitised, meaning they can be instantly accessed from anywhere in the world.

The physical exhibition was accompanied by monthly curator-led tours and an events programme, which expanded upon the exhibition. The website includes further resources, including a timeline, map, recordings from events and a guide to library and archive resources available at Senate House Library and other institutions to explore the exhibition's themes further.

In the Grip of Change co-curator and IHR Fellow Juanita Cox said:

“As someone deeply invested in the stories of Britain’s Caribbean communities, I believe social cohesion starts with understanding. In the Grip of Change: The Caribbean and its British Diaspora, drawing on an AHRC-funded Windrush Scandal project, explores Britain’s enduring ties with the Caribbean – and how migration, resistance and independence movements have shaped both regions.

"Taking the exhibition online means we can share these vital histories more widely and contribute to the vital work already happening within Black British communities.”

In the Grip of Change co-curator and Academic Librarian Argula Rublack added:

“I am delighted to launch In the Grip of Change as an online exhibition and want to extend my sincere thanks to everyone who helped make it possible. It marks a meaningful opportunity to bring our Caribbean and Black British history materials to a global audience, strengthening our commitment to make our unique collections accessible to everyone for exploration, learning and research.”

Award-winning poet Jenny Mitchell wrote a poem in response to her emotions on visiting the exhibition at Senate House Library. Listen to her poem ‘The Caribbean Grip’ here
