The cooperation between the University of London and HKU SPACE (formerly DEMS) is a longstanding one.

From its outset, over 60 years ago, DEMS offered preparatory law courses for the London LLB degree. In the 1980s, responding to community demand, HKU SPACE expanded its teaching provision to include also the Accounting, Banking, Business, Economics, Finance and Management programmes (Academic Direction: London School of Economics and Political Science). This was followed by the BSc in Computing and Information Systems (Academic Direction: Goldsmiths), the Master of Financial Management (Academic Direction: SOAS) and the Master of Business Administration (Academic Direction: Royal Holloway and later Queen Mary). In the 2000s, the LLM and courses to support the University of London BA/Diploma in English were offered. In 2016/17, HKU SPACE launched the MSc Professional Accountancy (Academic Direction: University College London). All programmes are fully managed by both academic and administrative staff.

The University of Hong Kong’s Department of Extra Mural Studies (DEMS) was established in 1956/57, the first continuing education unit in a university in the region. DEMS played a significant role in the University’s provision of lifelong learning opportunities for the wider community and, in 1992, it was renamed as the School of Professional and Continuing Education (HKU SPACE). The University has a recognised role in lifelong learning and, as the continuing education arm of the University, HKU SPACE fulfils this part of the University’s mission by providing learning opportunities for personal, professional and career advancement for people from all walks of life.

“I am immensely honoured to receive a first-class LLB degree from the University of London, which would not have been possible without the support of my loved ones, the camaraderie of my schoolmates, and the guidance from the esteemed professors invited by HKU SPACE to teach us.

The University of London LLB curriculum appealed to me with its dual advantages of flexibility and intellectual rigour. While the distance learning mode allows working students to study at their own pace and remain committed to their careers, assessments are conducted according to the same standards as those at such prestigious universities as LSE and UCL.

I am particularly thrilled to be awarded the Certificate of Excellence by the University of London in five of the nine modules I studied. As the Certificate is awarded to the top three performing students in each module worldwide, it is a testament to both the excellent teaching offered by HKU SPACE and the competitive edge Hong Kong students can gain through hard work and a genuine sense of curiosity.

For most of the duration of my studies, I was working as the Corporate Communications Manager of a regulatory body, and it was gratifying to be able to apply the legal thinking and analytical skills I had developed through the programme to some of my work. Looking ahead, I plan to study for the PCLL soon, and pursue a second career in law.”

“It feels amazing to know that I am being awarded with First Class Honours by the University of London.

Taking the opportunity I would like to say a big thank you to HKU SPACE, all the lecturers and fellow students for all the support they had given throughout my 3-year study journey. I wouldn’t be able to achieve what I have now without their help and encouragement.

While striving to get a balance between my day-time job, my study and personal life, I am so grateful to get to know some very good friends here. All the laughter we’ve shared makes these 3-year a truly wonderful memory of mine. Once again, thank you to HKU SPACE and look forward to studying here again in future.”
